"Wo will say "with Mr. Gaston, in aceord with tie GoTernmcnt,as longaslifo, property and the supremacy ot tl.o laws are endangered in Louisiana or any tt'i r State in the Union, to quarter sol diers in every city, town, village, "hamlet and precinct in the St ate, ami, if need be, enforce the laws at the cannon's mouth and the point of tho bayonet, feet hero we must stop. And what shall be come of the republic, we ask, when its sworn executors trample its laws underfoot? How can we expect that the States will obey and support the laws when the United States herself sashly and wantonly hacks them "witli the sword and rips them u with tho bayonet? True, tho Grant Parish and Coushatta massacre and the insurrection on the 14th of Sep tember, Warrant tho Government in Ailing Louisiana with soldiers, but are no wan-ant for interference with i the Legislature convened according to law. "While General Sheridan has an undisputed right, a? it is his bouuden duty, to punish the murderers, assassins and out laws of the State, thero is no war rant, while tho civil law is in opera tion, to declare a large body of citi zens banditti and to trv them bv a military tribunal. As a Republican We protest against the infringement of our laws. "Wo do not doubt tho devotion of Gen. A correspondent writing from Bridge Creek, British Columbia, on the 10th of January, says: "The thermometer at this place was frozen np, so we could not tell how cold it wac. A bottle of good brandy and a bottle containing two pounds of mercury were put out as a test on the 14th inst. In the morning both were frozen solid. "We find in one of our exchanges tho following truthful observations concerning county papers, and the duty of giving them a wholesomt support: The local paper is an absolute ne cessity to the country and communi ty where it is published. All tho papers cannot supply the placo cf tho home paper. That should bo tho first love of every man and wo man, for with the paper is the local ity identified. The paper gives the county and town where where print ed much of their importance in the world, and gives in detail the local U0WH hith cannot be ained by onv other source. Every week's issue of the paper is so much sound locll history, and the rise, growth and development of tho town and coun ty can be measured and recorded on ly by the local newspaper that con stantly is atherinfr its items. Peo pic do not properly appreciate their homo newspapeis. They measure the value of a newspaper too iritich by the number of columns it con tains. Tho homo paper at any price is the cheapest paper one can take, for in it is found the information to be obtained from no other source. Another thing to be taken into consideration. Every county has one or moro newspapers. Hence, tho circulation of each paper must be limit d. There is therefore tho greatest need of activity and interest on the part of tho people to give their own good paper, vigorous and substantial support. "We h ivo received three communi tions, one from Gale's vreek, one from Middlcton and one from Cor nelius, none of them having signa tures, and of course we could not j publish ihem if they were ever so good. hen you write letters to newspapers, gentlemen, sign vour names to them and then if fit they will reccne li o.Ucntiou. The following rule9 are excellent and we publish them for the benefit of speakers as well as writers: 1. JJe brief. This s the telegraphs and stenography. o 2. Be pointed. Don't write all around k subject without hitting it. 3. State facts, but don't stop t moralize, It's a drowsy subject. Let the render do his own dreaming. 4. Eschew preface. Plunge at once into j our subject, like a swim mer into cold water. 5. If you have written a sentence that you think particularly flne, draw your pen through it. A pet child is j always the worst in the faaiilv. 0. Condense. Make sure that vou really have an idea, and then record : it in the shortest possible terms. "We want thoughts in their quintessence. 7.
