"Western Fallacy."
The Forthcoming report I of the
Commissioners of Agriculture con
tains thrfolklTOSrpamgraph vOuck
illiterates thft necessity of the du
tributiorand Variety of industrial
pursuit & our couutry It will ap
ply with even greater force to Ore
gon than to Iowa: ; 4
The West has much to gain from
the teachings of & tat is tics. , Iowa,
tigorou and ambitious, too young
for despondency, is in a spasm of in
dignation against monopoly and an
excess "of .middlemen, and yet in
trade and transportation she has bnt
eight per cent., or little more than
half the proportion ot the Middle
States. She may hare too many and
too greedy go -betweens, and she
needs justice in the transportation of
her products; but these evils reme
died, the burden of her trouble wil
still remain. The great difficulty ul
her crops of industry, has fixty-one
per cent, of farmers instend of twenty-five.
Double track railroads, ca
nals vexed with , steam propellers,
Grunge associations, free trade, and
every other-fancied boon obtained,
she will still remain in comparative
poverty and positive discontent while
she continues to have less than four
teen per cent, of her people engaged
in manufacturing and mechanical
industry. History does not point
to a permanently prosperous people
having such a preponderance of pop
ulation engaged in agricultural pur
suits
Portland CiiHtoni House.
Senator Mitchell has iutroducod a
bill in the Senate appropriating
$100,000 to construct a Custom
House ami a bontlea warehouse in
Portland. . There is no necessity for
this appropriation at this time. The
Custom House at Astoria and the
branch at Portland are amply suffi
cient.ox all practical purposes. Mr
Mitchell would better secure this ap
Dromiaiion for the improvement of
of the Upper Columbia and Willam
ette rivers.- iWe have enough Cus
tom Houses. The revenues collected
through west of them are stolen by
officials to perpetuate them in office
and to support their extravagauce.
has bean a curse to Oregon and
burden to. the Govennent. In the
first -place the Custom House at As
toria was all and. is all that is neeclei
for the business of the Columbia am
Willamette rivers and money appro
priated for this purpose at Portland
is money thrown away. ,
Slaughter of Back-Pay Grabbers.
- . i . . .
Out of one hundred and two Rep
resentatives in the forty second Con
gress who'voted for the salary-grab,
says the Cincinnati Commercial
twenty-four only secured a re-nomi-hation
to Congress, while seventy
eight were either beaten for re-nomination
or otherwise withdrawn from
public view.
Qut of the twenty-four who voted
for the salary grab in March, 1873,
who were nominated for Congress in
1 874 'twelve were defeated at the
polls.
' Out of the whole number of one
hundred and two members voting
for the salary grab, only nine have
been re-elected to Congress. And
not all of these nine spared nionu
' rnents even took the money given
them by the high salary Act.
