THE INDEPENDENT. HILLS BORO : : :: : : FRIDAY. The Grove. jle Grove has advanced rapidly in wealth and population in the last three years aud it has every prospect of contiuued progress and prosperi ty. Keal estate has bjen on a stand for the last year but while there has not been an active 'demand for fowu property the prices have not fallen, there is no tendency iu the piesent growth of the town to centralization of population in any one part. The outskirts are spreading in all di rections and the cheaper lots find more Teddy sale. The ridge south of the business portion of the place is now dotted with many handsomo residences and is becoming a desira ble part for location. Sovesal fine dwellings have been built in this part of town this summer and last year a half dozen handsomo dwell ings were erected on the ridge. And when the Railroad is controlled by men of average business capacity the i Grove will have a station aud the t town will spread down over the high lands of A. Hinman and A. T. Wraith's faraas. The character of the people and the appearance of the Grove are very much like many New England villages. The houses are well painted and the streets are com paratively clean. The people are quite rural in their habits and in stincts, a large part of the popula tfcion'fceing or having been successful farmers and are conseouentlv m- - JL w dustrious and independent. The University has refined the formerly crude thought of the peop'o and moulded the character and . senti ments of the youth that have grown up around it. Pacific University and Tualatin .-VcnVJerav have advanced with xe growth of the State aud have taken n deep root in the hearts and hop s of the people. With a'strong and far seeing Faculty, a well balanced curriculum, and a large endowment fund, the future of this Institution is bright with hope. In advance of 'thegeneral intelligence and culture of the people itThas had many diffirmlties to contend with but in tho passage of centuries its high standard of scholarshin and its past st rubles will add new luster to Irs'name. The location of the Grove is ad mired by every one who has seen it. Nestling'among the oaks a id ever- greens on a gentle elevation, on tho western edge of the "West Plain, its steeples and cupolas shine in the distance like castles erected by 'the Frost King, while to the west cx tteirds tho Const range in picturesqr undulation, in the south stands Che halem moutains the resort of stu dents on pleasure excursions, with the Tualatin river winding in many a curve between, cast and north spreads the irregular and narrow 'West Plain fringed by dark forests of r and dotted with white farm houses, then beyond rise the Port land hills and the hills that shut us off from the Columbia, while far away and far above rises the Cas- cade range serrated with mountain peaks hoary with the accumulated 'frosts of centuries looking down on the sunny and fertile Valley of the Willamette. One ArgumentC .X Spoiled Republican. for Ever since the Republican ascend ancy inCongress it has been a stand ing argument with that party in ev ery campaign that Democrats should help elect the Republican candidate 'for Senator or Representative be 'cause he would be in sympathy with (he Republican majority inCongress, and therefore could elTect more for tho interests of our people on this Ceast than a Democrat who would be an opponent in a hopeless minor ity. This always seemed to us to be a weak and dishonorable argument. It assumed that Democrats should ignore their political opinions and defeat their cherished principles by their own votes for the paltry con sideration of dollars and cents. This argument will profoably be reversed in the next Congress and we expect to hear Democrats trying to per suade Republicans to help sendDem ocratic Representatives and Sena tors to Congress because the$ would he in accord with the Democratic majority in Congress. As it is quite .certain from present indications that in two years hence Congres will be largely. Democratic, we expect to pee l.epubl-eanalf they have been sin- cere, voting for Democratic candi dates fW Congress. Will you do it gentlemen ? Send in j-our name for the Ixpe- pendent, larmeru :-n I ail laboring men and help us along. We wish as it sub- to enlarge -our peper as soon will pay to do so and a larce s;ripti?m! list is our only means to work the 'desired improvement. Let each subscriber ask his neighbor to subscribe and send us at least one name each and wc will ht.ve a large subscription list. Duniway is glad that the fools are not all dead yet and rejoices in her position of Fool Killer. This is the first and only time that wc have known of both characters being united in one person. Suicide, D., and put an end to the breed. The Oregonian came out with a double sheet on New Year's and was just crammed with interesting read ing. The Oregonian is tho people's paper which is proven by its in-! creased circulation in this count v. HOME MANUFACTURE Ed. Independent: I notice an ar ticle in your paper of Dec. 18th en titled "Home Manufacture".!, which the writer (or Egyptian as he names himself,) heaves a plcintive fcigh over the condition of things in gen eral. He states that he is about to venture on forbiden grounds but he treads quite heavy for his first btep forward he weighs the Grangers in a balance and decider that they arc honest, good &c. for which he has our thanks. I3ro. C. don't die yet, you will see better times before lang. You have the blues now no doubt. The Grangers are farmers. They propose to attend to their own busi iness, and if mechanics will unite together as the farmers are doing to protest themselves against specula tors they will procure their material aj less figures so they can furnish ar ticles as cheap as they can furnish articles as cheap as they can be had anywhere and still make good wag as. Graugeis ni;d everybody else will buy where they can get articles that they want the cheapest. You say every penny taken from the mechanics impoverish the far mers." Who takes the pennies from the mechanics ? Do the," -JV- ' trons," because they puicnase the j same articles for "20 per cent, less thereby retaining that amount at ; " s . home or those that sell von material '. at 50 per cent, profit? Where are! those mechanics traveling about ! sick and Bore ? What caused this ? Was it because the farmers shipped a few articles, or is it because times arc dull and money rathdV scarce or is it because times are dull and mon ey scarce, or is it on account of low prices for grain ? You ask, "What are tho boys of the farm a going to do," that is one thing the formers are preparing to attend to. ana m a . V ' few years you will sec that they will J m iarms reaar to ieea tne inecnanics. Capitalists are the ones that go into the manufacturing business and that develop the mineral resources of the country, call on thorn, and tho Chi nese will chop the timber up that is rotting. Don't fret about the boys that are on the. farms, and if you have a surplus about the towns and cities send them to farming where they can make an independent liv ing. H. B. Morgan.
