on several parties and condemned
them to cremation in this world and

been able to learn the particulars of
this disgraceful affair, and as the
case may be brought for trial in the
Court, we say nothing more about it

School district No. 48 has completed
its school house located at Beaver
ton. It is one of the best buildings

will begin Dec. 7tli with Mr. Horace
Spencer as teacher.

which they expect to have leady to

man, Hattie Martin and Ella Watt.
A Row occurred in the peaceful
and orderly town of Forest Grove
recently. Two or three of the town
boys attempted to'floga student and
the student struck one of them with
the hook of a pocket knife and made
an ugly but not dangerous wound
on his neck beneath the ear.

Z. W "Woods sold his farm of
480 acres three miles northeast of
this nlace recently for $12,000, to
Joseph Connell, a brother to W.Con
nell of Portland, and proposes to
move into Hilisboro to give his
children the advantage of our pub
lic school.

Elder Chandler was brouerht out
from Portland, on the cars, on Sat
urday last to Forest Grove. He was
received at Smith's crossinjrby his
friends and conveyed to his home.
Strong hopes are entertained of his
jecovery.
Festival West Union grange had
A feast at their lodge on last Friday.
Speeches were made by Mr. Flan
ning and others. A splendid time
was had.
The debating club at West Union
will on next Saturday evening debate
the important question, "Which is
the most useful to man, a dog or a
gun."
Grand preperations are being
made by the M. E. Sunday School
for the celebration of Christmas at
this place.
A subscription is being taken to
purchase an organ for the M. E.
Church here. It ought to succeed
and will.
How. W. D. Hare was offered
$10,00 for his farm, south of Hilis
boro lately.

From the last New Northwest we
learn that Mrs. Coburn, assistant ed
itor of that paper, is sick of conges
tion of the lungs in Yamhill county.
There will be a Christmas ball at
Cornelius, and it is reported that the
classic Grove will have a party too.
Samuel J. Stott of Wapato lake
sold a lot of lard at Forest Grove re
cently for fifteen cents per pound.
Prof. Newell could get a good
class in vocal and instrumental mus
ic at the Grove.
Tue joke on Mr. Wheeler about
getting lost on his own farm, an ac
count which appeared in last week's
issue, grows better. It appears that
he went off from the working party
of which Mr. Wooley was boss to
another party and he tried four suc
cessive times to reach the former
party going back to the latter party
each time and taking a new start. At
last he had to get a man to conduct
him to his own party. He did not
even know some new rails which he
had split lately.
Flour is selling at Corvallis for $1
a sack. It is $1.25 here. How is it
that when wheat is only sixty cents
per bushel that jeople will buy
flour at $2.50 per hundred ? Two
bushels and a half of good wheat
will make a hundred pounds of flour

Many persons will remember the
horse "Brutus," imported by Mr.

ago. This horso was pronounced
worthless as a stallion by many. On
yesterday a mare had a fine colt from
him, being the first it is thought ev
er sired by Mm. "Brutus" is from
a better strain than the "Marquis"

They have made night hideous with
their infernal howling for several
nights past. We have the dog

they fool about this establishment

At the West Union school house
last week the question, Resolved,
"That man will do more for fame
than money" was debated. One of
S. A. Holcomb's boys took the
ground that gold is not money and
also many other kinds of wealth, and
effectually demoralized the negative
side of the question.

about our Col. Jo. Meek: Col. Jo
Meek, the "River of the Wester," is
shouldering his jawbone and show-

landers. His lectures are racy and

S. Hughes and R. Porter of the
Grove have built a new walk from
Mr. Hughes place clear to the Col
lecre fence. It is only three feet
wide but the Grove boys and girls

It keeps our teamsters in town all
their time running alter jobs of work
so they don't get to do what they
have encracred. Some of them will
soon have to wait about as long as
their customers.
A brute who lives not many miles
from Wapato lake insulted a neigh
bor's wife recently. The matter
was amicably settled betweeu tho
two husbands.
Reoverino. The mare. "Nell," of
Mr. Reed's was taken from the
slings on last Sunday, and she had
so far recovered as be able to walk
some fifty yards.
The village of Dilley, above For
est Grove, wants a blacksmith. A
good paying situation for some one,
building furnished.

The Patrons at the Grove had a
cotillion party in their Hall last Sat
urday night and had the jolliest
"break down" that the Grove has
witnessed for many years. Henry
Buxton, Ben Cornelius, A. S. Watt,
Wm. Kane and their families and
other prominent Grangers took a
leading part and made tho building
fairly shake. Like sensible folks
they all went home at midnight.

Club organized Tuesday evenincr

good school building for so small a
place. Tho house certainly
does honor to the district. There is
now in attendance forty-five regular
scholars. The school is taught bv
Judge L. T. Maulsby.
John Goodkll finished his schoo
at Quick s schoolhouse some time
since. Ho did not use a single ha
zel during the term although plenty
of that school boy brush stood tempt
ingly at hand all around the house.
Voos Villa, the pleasure resort of
the gay people of Portland, situated
near the mouth of the Canyon,
caght fire and burned down last
Saturday evening. Loss estimated
at $10,000.
Presuent Marsh's daughter Lucia
is lying in a critical condition from
an attack oi typhoitl fever, and
Leonard the youngest of his family
also has symptoms of the same dis
ease.
J. D. Bates who had his leg brok
en a fortnight since attended Sun
day school at the Grove last Sab
bath. He can walk a little with , the
aid of crutches.
Ave hardly think it necessary to
call the attention of our County
Commissioners to the old flagstaff
that obstructs the Court House
grounds.
Anew dwelling house is being
put up at Dilley by a Mr. Sweetfield.
The people up there will soon be
comfortably supplied with church and
other conveniences.
The average Hilisboro hoodlum
amuses himself during these eve
nings playing "seven up" on the top
of a sugar barrel.
Our Sheriff and his Deputies are
busy visiting the various precincts
for the purpo- e of receiving the tax
es due the county.
H. B. Morgan deputy Sheriff re
turned last week from East of the
Mountains. Did not find his man. i
Organized. On last Wednesday
night, there was organized a lodge of
I. O. G. R. at McKinney's Hall.
There was a godly number of char
ter members. The following arc the

The Lyceum at Dilley debated
the question Resolved, That a com
pulsory system of education would
be benificial to this country." Tho
judges agreed to disagree and tho
question was laid over until next
Saturday. These debates are well
attended by both ladies and gentle
men. The boys go into it in
earnest and the debates ate decided
ly warm.

School at the Grove have got anoth
er organ on trial a Burdett which
they think of purchasing. The prico
is $300. Nearly two-thirds of the
sum is already subscribed by the cit-

by giving a concert on Christmas eve
as we have heard.
President Marsh failed to fill his
appointment at the M. E. Church in
this place last Sabbath on account
of sickness in his family. Quite a
respectable congregation waited hU
services some time after the hour of
appointment, sang a few songs and
went home.
The Grangers' Market in Port
land is having a big run of custom.
They have put beef down to2 cents.
They propose to make meat cheaper
for the people and realize more for
their stock. We say success to tho
Grangers Market.

is now nearly well again.
