ment of tUe Penitentiary. Not wish
ing to be misunderstood wo state
Again tibat this is an independent pa
per. We have no love for either
Bourhon Democracy or Ring Repub
licanism, and as in the past we have
criticised all parties so shall we con

Chicago and St. Louis are now
having a controversy about the size
of fCbeir -wemeri's feet. A St. Louis
paper said recently that the young
men ofChicago do not use any dash
board for their buggies now as the
Chicago girls' feet are so big that
'dashboards are useless. Another
St "Louis paper tells o'f a Chicago
woman who put her foot into the
Mississippi at Memphis and the wa
ter raised three feet at St. Louis
Tne Clackamas county Council of
Grangers passed the following reso
lution at the last session: "That we
as good Patrons of Husbandry are
strongly opposed to the employment
of Chinese laborers, and that we will
do all that we lawfully can to pre
Tent their being so employed by our
citizens, and more especially by our
farmers, and wo respectfully request
nil members of our Order, through
out the State and nation to co-oper
ate with us in carrying out this reso
lution.

will be cut oil. It is unfortunate
that the last Legislature had such a
poor appreciation of tho wants and
desires of our State prison convicts.
Now who does not like mince pie
with brandy in it, and raitin pudding;
and if so why in the name ot common
sense and common humanity did
our Legislators rofusc them this
thing that i.jminco pies with bran
dy, and raisin pudding? O, for a
Bersrh!

Directors of rail roads in this State
