tbe rumor Is probably well founded.

Workmen are busy putting In the
machinery of the excelsior plant, a car
load of which arrived from Lebanon
Saturday. In the list of machinery are
two balers, one weighing 7000
pounds and the other 0700 pounds.
A battery of eight knives will
be started at first, although tin
proprietors expect to Increase this ca
pacity, and have built to provide for a
larger output. Mr. Peterson inlormed
a Ul'AKD reporter that some excelsior
will probably be made within a week,
but much work work will yet he nec
essary before the plant is working
smoothly, 'lhe plant will rtait up
with a capacity of about 8tOO pounds
in 8 hours.
A laige force of men Is now employ
ed In setting up the machinery and
finishing the Imildiug, together with
the adjuHting of pulleys, helts. drying
wood for the plant, and the many
other things needed to be doue.
This is the most important In
dustry to come to Kugene during tbe
past year, and there ia room for
more.

CUIMINATION OF POLITICAL DISPUTES.
tpeelal u u uuaau.
Kkankkort, Ky., Jan. 30. Hou.
Wiu, GtOtbal, contestant with Hon.
W. H.Taylor, for the seal of governor
of Kentucky, was assassinated today.
The murder la the outcome of oue of
the BKMl bitter political fights w Inch
has ever occurred in this state. Tbe
crowds in the streets are elinrmnuM,
and people frantic. It is impossible
t" f. cure intelligent Information re
garding the crime.
One thousand of Taylor's friends
iirmeil with Wluchestris have Uen here
forsvenU days, and tin Ooehle men
aie now mussing rapidly. The outlook
is ominous, and vigorous steps must be
at once taken ti restore order, and
prevent more crime.
I William Ooetiel came forward this
year as a comparatively new figure in
Keulucky politics, but displayed a
great tuleiil for organization. lue
democratic conveutiou met In June
last, and after sessions protracted for
about a week Htate heuator William
(ioebel was nomluateil for governor.
The platform Indorsed Mr. ltryau; de
clared for the IU to-1 ratio; denounced
trusts as the fruit of republican mon
opoly and tarilt laws; and coudemued
i he administration's Philippine policy.
Ooebel'e methods weru bitterly de
nounced by Intlueutlal elements of tbe
party, which came together later at
ijexiugton on August 16, and nomi
nated an iudepeudeut democratic
democratic ticket headed by ex-Oover-
nnr John Youug Hrown. This con
vention aho Indorsed Mr. Hryan, but
it devoted most of 1U platform to a de
tailed denunciation of Ooebel, his
election law aud his political methods.
it was tbls means that V. S. Taylor,
who was altorney-geueral, aud who
received tbe uominatlou for governor,
succeeded iu tbe election, not how.ver
until Ooebel bad carried tbe matter to
the supreme court. Mr. ltryau made
speeches in Kentucky during the first
week of October for the Ooebel ticket
as representing tbe regular party or
ganization, with special reference to
the fact tbat the suooess of tbat ticket
meant tbe return ofMr. Uryau's friend,
Hon. J. C. 8. Blackburn, to the U. B.
senate. Practically nothing la obtain
able at tbls time regardlug tbe private
life of Mr. Ooebel. Suffice It is to say
that this assasstuation is likely to cause
much trouble. Tbe crime Is the pin
nacle of disgrace brought about by tbe
rotteuness of political methods.)
