Kiie Oitj Guard BAN! RIMY ....UKC lii TO CORRESPONDENTS. Th. hualnoaa ih WEEKLY G eons iderable trouble of deoartment UARDli caused ouble by corre- mondents addressing the pro orietors personally. Addreaa an letters referring 10 the ' nawtoa per or business connected there with to THE GUAHD, Eugene, Oregon. it's worse For a woman t;iPE NOMK COUNTRY Barren, Cold, and llevold of Tiraber W hence Comes tbe Hold J PgftlaDd Mluea Hid Mlnersli. Let no man go to Cape Nome thinking it a holiday excursion. True tnare are no Chiloat pauses to climb, and in Bummer no Ice and snow to encounter. But the (tent ot the weather, except for a few ex ceptional days in July and August is trying in the extreme. It rains, blows and storms almost contin uously. The sun shiuei only at in tervals while the north wind has "let go" to give the south wind a chance or vice versa, and neither is very long "getting hold" again. There are but four or live months in the year during which any work can be done. The days are long with 18 to 24 hours of daylight and a man can work as many hours as he cn stand up to it. 1'be country is a barren waste so far as vegetable life is concerned. A species of moss grows on the tundra or level places into which the foot hinks from an inch or two to a foot or eighteen inches according to the amount of moisture present. A kind of grass grows on the lower slopes of the mountains and abovi that all is desolation. No tree grow in that latitude, of even th most stunted character nothim that would suffice to build a fire. All fuel has to lie carried there nave suoh as has drifted in from warmer latitudes from theses. The sup ply of this, though sufficient for last summer, will be totally ex hausted by the return of spring. Whoever goes there next summer should be aB sure to carry a supply of tuel as ot tnod. ANCIKNT IlIVER CHANNELS. Whence comes this vast supply of gold? What iB its source? Von Humboldt doclared long before then- had been nn actual discoerv of gold in the northern fields that the source of the gold on this conti nent would yet lie found in Alaska Discoveries are certainly approach ing an unknown eource of supply, as the farther north they lead the greater the ijUantity of it found. All up and down the I'aaitio (golden) Coast, wherever placers have been found, there have been uncovered the bed and channels of ancient rivers running from north to south with well worn water marks on bed rock and salient pointB, showing that water llowetl for ages from north to Booth in these channels. In places they have been broken; sections of them buried deep under vast mountains of rock. In other places lifted high upon their tops and shoulders. 1IAKKK COUNTY DEPOSITS. Uunniug aoross the oeutral part of the country in the Maker oounty mining district is one of these ancient channels lifted to an average elevation of .r,(HX) feet above the sea. It is 300 to 400 teet wide and can be as plainly traced now in some of its oourse as it could have been while the ancient river flowed in its bed. The gre.it ex jMinBe of getting water to it has preventod its being washed, though its richuess has been known since the days of '49 to 55. Ths rich placerB along the modern streams which draiu these modern moun tains most certainly had their origin in this ancient channel, and the gold has been brought down from places where these streams have broken it. The higher up these streamB toward this course the coarser the gold, and the larger nuggets have been found. Probably more than fifty miilions of dollars worth of gold has been found and carried away from this single ter ritory in the last forty years. A million dollars or more continues to be mined and carried away now every year, and single solid pieces of gold have been found there that were worth $5,000 to $10,000 each and more. To suffer with akin disease than it is for a nan, for a smooth akin and a clear com plexion are aential elements of femsle beauty. When tbe taint of scrofula is in the blood it will tie sure to show itself soon or late. Often its manifestations are as repulsive as they are painfnl. Many people have been cured of scrof. ula in its most malignant forms by the use of Dr. Pierte's Golden Medical Discovery. This remedy is remarkable for its power to punfy the blood. It absolutely -liminatet the corrupting ele ments. It makes the blood clean and rich. It increases the action of the blood-making glands, and so increases the quantity of pure blood supplied to tilt- body. -I will fortw thank yem for adviinir me to take Dr. Herca's Golden Merited IHacoTery," wrllea Mrs Jos. Murphy, of Fonda. I'ueahonlss Co , lows. "II hit cured me of chronic cn.fuls of twelve years' ataodtria;. Ad dress Dr. R. V. loerce, Buffalo, N. Y. the use of the courthouse for politi ical meetings will meet with the approv! of retsonable men. There is not another available room in town that is suitable for public meetings of any size. Besides political meetings fully represent the eoplo of the county whose money built the structure. The county has a janitor who can ste that the room is decently used by such gatherings. Mr Kakin s motion, which we heartily commend, is as follows: "It is tbe sentiment of the members of this meeting that the court house be used for all political meet' ings." BTIOH KKWAKUKD. Wm 1) Rynum, former Demo cratic congressman from Indiana, supported the McKinley Palmer and liuckner side show in 1896, and now gets his reward by being ap pointed to a lucrative office in the New York custom house. No one would blame Piesideut McKinley for taking cure of his own if he did it in a straighlf irwurd manner. Hut the liynum appointment pro vokes Democratic ire as it is one of a commission of three which the law provides shall he divided politi oally. Uynum is not recognized as a Democrat, and tho so called Na tional Democratic ticket which he supported in opposition to Bryan recoived only 133,424 votes in the entire United Slates, and not single electoral vote. President McKinley has done himself no credit by using Btich a subterfuge in making an important appoint meut. The president should hold himself above pot house political methods. hi a 0" flhAAl iud tho bum hat YOU! iUI When your cold jttled down deeo in 1 sf t, cough syrups will not v vou.
