years, at U per mouth. The total
amount to be paid under the new con
tract for ten years Is $20,880.

support has made It a city of about
4,000 population now. It is the seal
of the University of Oregon, chartered
by the state and located In 1872. Reg
ular instruction of student began In
1876. Its management is eulrusted to
a board of regents, appointed for a
term of twelve years, by the governor,
and confirmed by the state senate. The
endowment amounts to about $160,000;
$100,000 from the sale of lands granted
by the state for university purpose,
and $50,000 by Henry Villard. In ad
dition an appropriation is made bien
nially by the state legislature. The
campus lies outheast of the center of
Eugene, and contains 27 acre. The
faculty number twenty-one, beside
the llbrartao and matron. There were
163 Btudenls present In 1898-99 In all
depart menu.
Eugene is well supplied with
churches, there oeing In addition to
our own, the Christian, Methodist,
Presbytorian, Baptist, Cumberland
Presbyterian, United Brethren and
Episcopal, as the principal ones. Of
these, perhaps the Christian church Is
the strongest probably the strongest
In the state. That denomination
maintains a divinity school here, and
It now has twenty-two atudenta. From
the foregoing it may be seen that the
moral Influences of the place are rea
sonably well cared for.
