Yesterday afternoon the Willamette
river at Eugene stood at I feet 4 Inches
above low water mark. The steady all
night rain brought It up with a rush,
and at noon today it reached the 8 foot
mark, since which it has commenced
to fall.
This rise Is unusual for this time of
the year, as there is no snow In the
mountains to come out with a rush,
and the rise represents nothing but
therain which has extended over the
entire watershed. The height reached
by the water can probably be account
ed for by the heavy August rains
which filled the ground allowing the
present ralDfall to reach the creeks aud
streams without being absorbed.

Reports Irom Interior markets noted
what appeared to have teu more wil
lingness to sell at prices on the basis of
13 and 11 cents there (or strictly choice
quality. Orders from brewers at 1 and
2 cents over that basis were competed
lor keenly by interior aud city dealers,
particularly by the former, and sellers
of Pacific coast stock were aotively
looking after their Interests. Yearlings

not easily salable at current quotations.

Woodhurn, Or., Oct. 18. On a call
Issued by the liuttevllle Hopgrowera
Association, about 200 hopmen from
' Clackamas, Marlon, Washington and
i amhill counties met in Remington's
theater today to take steps toward
maintaining the price of hops. This
was the result of the present uusatls
factory ooudltion of tbe market,
cou,, with the belief that dealers are
manipulating prices so as to bring
prices still lower. After considerable
discussion It was agreed that an incor
poration should lie organized with a
capital of 26,000, the object of which
should be to glye flusni'lal assistance
to the small groweis, who would thus
be enabled to hold their hops.
Anew org miration was also per
fected, known as the Willamette Val
ley Hopgrowera' Association, with
lit adquarters lu Woodburu, and the
following officers:
President, Oeorge K Hoveudeu; sec
retary, Henry L Bents, treasurer,
Frank Feders. These men have 26 to
100 acres of hops each.
The hopgrowers say they have evi
dence that satistles them that dealers
are doing everything lu their power
to keep hop prices low even offering
to Eastern buyers hops a! a low
er price than they can lie obtained
for in Ortgon In order that reports
based on such oilers may luduoe tbe
growers to sell cheap. The growers be
lieve that extensive manipulation of
the market Is beiug resorted to, aud
they take this mans or prate ting
themselves.
The association adjourued to meet
again here October 26, when the new
organization is to be perfected and put
in working order.

Asia a well known fact, a large per
