couple of days ago, the sewer pipe
was la'd therein, and most of the 0ft re
blug removed to be used in the work
further on. It was detected by the
city surveyor that a mistake had been
made, and that about forty feet of the
pipe would have to be dug out and
the same lowered about six Inches at
the uortb end. This work was being
accomplished when the fatal accident
occurred. Mr Denny, one of tlie men
aaked to work at the point, refused, as
be considered It too dangctous without
mora and stronger cribbing. He com
municated this fact to Mr New and a
number of other workmen. Mr New
replied, and said that he thought It
perfectly safe and continued at his
work, lu this connection, Mr Denny

Hamblin, familiarly known a "Doc,"
died Friday at his mine six mllea from
Wolf creek, after a few daya' lllneaa.
His wife was called there Friday from
Portland, and his daughter, Mrs W H
Dreunen, went out from here on Sat
urday morulug. The funeral took
place yesterday at Oakland, where ha
formerly resided. The deceaaad was
born in Indiana on September, 1832,
and came to Oregon In 1862. Ha
leaves a wife, three daughtera and two
