Mr M W Gorman, Se'retaiy M -iuiis, Portlaud, Oregon-lVar Sir: I h. rewlth Iranstiilt to you a report upon my ob.frvalloos nlative to the altitude of Mount St Helms. Iahomadeob s. rvations at several points in tho vi t'lulty of the mountain, and tho com puted altitudes will be found Mow, tho Instrumental outfit bavin- beeu furnished by Hie Govt Weather P.ti rcau. I expect to make a further r, port to the proper oinclu:-, dicu-sirg various theoretical and technical ,,,i,.g. Hons which havo ari-en dining the process of reducing the observmloiis, hut the present report include all the facts of general Inu rest. Very respectfully, E II Mi- V i i, HE POUT. PARTY AM) Ol'THV. Owing to delays encountered by tlie Mazauiaa on the way to the mountain. I fouud it necessary to proceed iu ad- vai c oiiiie uiaiu paity, In order t make the observhtlons at the lime "greed upon befoudand w Itli the bu-e stations. My Immediate party cou aistedofMrHC Ansley, MrUhnrles H Frazler, Mr C t.' Shullord and my self. The iiiMliuiueutal outfit comprised two otandard nieicurial barometers, mountain lattern, nmliufuetuied by Green, ai.d a pair of wet and dry bulb tliHrmonicters, all furnished by Km Govt Weather llureiu. The l aiomi tero were compared wiih Mr Piigce's standard at Poitland both beiote lei.v lug and after returning, nnd who found not to bave sutl'ered injury dur lug the trip. THKOIfSKUVAllllNS The hypsometric party arrived at tlio summit of Kt Helena alu tit :i p tn, July l'Jth, Pueiflo standard time. The j struments were Imniedintely set up and allowed to stand until 4 o'cl ek, when readiuss were made. At 4.3 readings w ere aain taken, unit ow log to the condition in which we found tiw ice iu a.-ceiidiiig, it was not thought advisable to remain longeron the sum mit. A moderate win 1 blew steadily from a little south ot west during tho entire stay on the summit, so that the I' mperature obtained (31 F. fort'ie dry bulb, and 2S3 F. lor the wet bulb ) were doubtltss those of tlie free air, not much altered by contact with tt.e mountain a very important consid eration Iu barometric work. The un aii of the four barometer rtaditigs, two lor each instrument, nave a pressure of iO.liT.j luetics. Corresponding ob.sei va tions were made hourly during the en tire day by the U S Weather I'.ineiui observers at Portlund, Seattle, Fort Canuy, Spokane, Walla Walln and Haker City. A glauce at the map will show that these six stations completely surround the mountain, i that the vitiating i fleets of barometric and temperature gradients are almost whol ly eliminated. The barometer fell con tinuously all day at each of the base statious, and a slight fall was noted at the summit durirg the interval be tween observations, so that there prob al ly was no abnormal disturbance of the atmosphere anywhere within lliu region, and the results should be cor respondingly reliable. The observa tiouaatthe base stations, reduced to sea level, gave a mean barometer pres sure of 9 03 ) Inches, aud a mean tem perature of 6G.7 F. This temperature combined with that ut the summit, gave for the mean temperature of the wholo atmospheric column from base to summit, 4S.8 F. Observations were taken at Echo Lake on July ISth, and at three places, uear the mountain ou tlm 20th. Cor responding data w ere also furnished from the base stations on these dsys. MS T (K Al.TITl KKS The following list gives the ihsigna tion of all poiulsat which observations weie made, with the computed altitude of each above sea level: Summit of St Helens OT.'i'J Level Plateau IV 3 Timber line !"'' Greeu liuttes Camp I'1''- F.cho Lake, wuter level I ITU The level plateau mentioned above is on the western side of tho mountain; the tra I leading up from Greeu Unties f'amp skirts aloug Hie southern edg" oi' the plateau. The timber lino is of course not a sieciflc point, but an ave rage of the highest trees on the south ami est aides of the mountain was taken. The three buttes to the west of tlie plateau have an altitude very near that of tho limber line. Echo Lake Is kno n locally as Trou Lake. I'KKVIOfS ESTIMATKS The estimate of the altitude of St Helens accepted by the government and ublished in Gannetl's Dictionary of altitudes, Is 9750 feet, which slightly exceeds my estimate. I am informed that Col Elliott, formerly stationed at Vancouver barracks, has estimated the a'i'nd'' at fW'S feet. It Is fpuite im-.os-ib!e to nconclle the pressure ami temperutuns given above with such an estimate. U is beyond question mon th. in a the." -and f.-et too low.
