Hall j Ouard,Mjr30
The North Dakota troops en route to
Presidio, and from there to the Philip
pines, passed Eugene yesterday, the
first sei.'tinu going through at 5:30 iu
the afternoon, and the second section
at 1 a m, today. Large crowds of our
neonle wer at the depot with luncln 1
and tlowers for the bqys, aud the l v.
moments they were with us, were
fraught with interest. The button fad
it on the iucrease and bouquets and
smiles from the young ladies wire
quickly exchanged for the eoldier boy
button at even ratio. One ot the North
Dakota boys, speaking to a Guakh
reporter said that Oregon was the ben
state they had passed through, ami
also the most patriotic They didn't
receive a lunch or bouquet until they
reached the confines of our state. He
ventured a guess that Eugene had a
conpany at the front, by the lurgi
number til the depot, and the enlhUH
asm manifested. A number of our
people entrusted letters to company
with these boys to be delivered at
Manila.

MARK HANNA'S WORK
The mortgage! of Lane county wo have shown from
tho official records increased since October 1890 in tho sum
of $45,0K). And some gold standard advocates have actu
ally shouted "Hurrah for Mark Hanna" when confronted
with these figures, saying that mortgages were an indication
of prosperity probably of the Gold Standard kind. This is
probably truo if you are tho President of the Mortgage Loan
Company that has received it, hut on tho other hand if
your little home has been plastered for tho necessaries of
life, all the Mark Mannas, Geors, Tongues, Kuykondalls
and ( 'ondons in the world cannot make you believo it a
blessiug.
Now we have taken from the official records of Lane
county the assessments for tho yoars 1893, 1894, 1895, 1890
and 1897 to show our readers how tho gold standard has
affected the property of our county. Horo aro tho figures:

Citizens of Lane county study these figures well and
carefully. What do they mean?
Loss of Gross property in 4year $747,028

this mean bankr iptcy for our people?
These figures are official as any citizen can ascertain
by calling at the clerk's office and' examining the assess
ment rolls
This is the kind of 'prosperity" that tho Gold Stand
ard is giving the country.
