conscripted into the confederate
service, serving in Price's army for
three months. Escaping from tin
rtjI service he went to Illinois,
where he enlisted in the Union
army, and saw shout one year's

present when Jo Johnston sur
rendered the remnant of the army
of the Tennessee to Sherman at
Durham's station, North Carolina
in March 1805.
On his discharge from service he
returned to Illinois and the follow
ing year, 1800, came to Oregon and
located on u farm near Sinilhfleld,
in Richardson precinct. In 1871
Mr Kirk was a candidate for county
