The Oregonian editor is breaking
down mentally by reason of the
strain of the financial question.
Witness this question an I ansaer:
' What is base money? Any
of le-s value than gold money."
If the Or 'gonian has any money
coined or issued by the United
States, ,,haee" or otherwise that it
wiring to dispose of ft a discount
it can find a ready market lor the
same. The Oregonian calls silver
"bise" money and, according to its
definition it should be of less value
than gold. But silver money is of
equal value with gold, and the Oie
gotiian newspaper lakes it daily in
payment on the same terms as
i;old. That being the case it is
surprising that the intelligent
editor sln uld fill his columns with
such apparent nonsense.
Register: "James (1 Blaine stands
for the maxim that a publio office
is a public trust."
Our contemporary is rather
mixed, The lamented drover is
responsible for the epigrammatic
saying. Yet tvon Grover, with his
political mugwumpery, held that
view at naught whenever it ran
counter to his prejudices and ambi
tions, ll is not to bo regretted that
the masses of our political organi
zations do not take kindly to tho
Pharisaism that from street corners
and official easy places proclaims
its "he'ter than thou" platitudes.
