Tho Inter-Ocean prints pictures (if both women, and continuing tlie i r ter says of Miss Carson: '"Miss Carson Is a representative of tho extreme West, being a in live of Portland, Ore. In appearance and temperament Miss Carson might leu model for tho "I Will" of her pro gresslve corner of the world. Of tall commanding presence, with head well modeled, and features expressing limitless Willi tenderness, she Is a perfect typo of the scholarly, well bal anced Western woman. Miss Cat son's father, Hon. John C. Carson, was one of tho pioneer settlers of Ore gon, and has ever been Identified with the best Interests of the state- He was for many years a member of the State Senate. Miss Carson was educated In Oregon and California, graduating from a college that did not at that time confer degrees. A few years later it happened, curiously, thai tho degree A. M. was conferred upon heron the samo day by the two lead ing colleges of the West. Miss Parson has always bcon closely Identified witli the educational Inteiests of her state, both In tho public school and college work, and speaks most highly of the public schools of Portland, and of the excellent high school, w ith Rt beauti ful building. It Is with tho eollero work, however, that Miss Carson has been most active, and it la of tho Western colleges and their aims that she would speak. For llvw years she was connected with the Congrega tional college, Pacltlo I'nlveisity, at Forest drove. This is oi.e of tho old est colleges in the state; and has alum ni who are among tho builders of the great, growing commonwealth of Ore gon. Its flint alumnus, Mr Harvey W. Scott, Is the well-known editor of the chief paper of tho Northwest, the OreRonlan. President McClelland of this college Is now trying to secure funds tn meet the generous oiler of Mr. D. K. Pearson of Chicago of fr(),- 000 given on condition that the college will raiso $1,")0,000. "Tho leading college of Oregon Is tho State University, where for eight years Miss Carson has occupied Hie chair of rhetoric and English. "It was recently estimated thnttiO per cent of the present population of Oregon are pioneers or the children of pioneers. Tho pioneers of Illinois know tlie mettle that such a popula tion possesses. Tho colleges of Oregon are con- stantly sanding the flower of their youth to Eastern colleges, and it is their pride that these youths take rank wherever Jthey go.. Last year tho American Institute of Sacred Litera ture at the University of Chicago offered two prizes for tho best translations of Xew Testament (Jreek. The first prize was taken by a young lady in a Canad ian university, whllo the second was won by Mr Clyde Fogle, a sophomore In the University of Oregon. As there were more than a thousand competi tors, Miss Carson and her associates naturally consider this quite a victory lor their college. Every summer tor ysurs Miss Carson has taken the long journey from Portland to Boston ami Xew York, taking a special course of study; hut this year she decided to take the summer term at the univer sity of Chicago. Of her soourn here she says: "I should like to express my appreciation of Chicago University. The opportunities it gives for regular umuier work Is very vuluuble to the West, In the example it sets as well us the welome it extends and the inspira tion It gives. It Is a long distance to como from Oregon and return for a six weeks' course, yet I hope to come again next summer. My tower room in Foster Hall open to all the re freshing breezds, looking nut upon the blue waters of the lake by the day, and the twinkling lights of the midway by night, and the throngs of people seek ing recreation and rest In the beauti ful parks of Chicago, will haunt me witli Its pleasant associations during the coming winter.
