at 12 cents have also been made. It
Is said, too, that 13 and 14 cents have
been tald for sisclal lots of extia

the fact. Today we were told by at
least two parties that on November 17,
1872, Just exactly twenty-four years
prior lo last Tuesday that live inches of
snow fell right hero In Eugene, We
hunted up our newspaper llles and
found this to be correct. We also
found this Item In the issue of Nov 23,
1S72: "During the past week wo have
been regaled with regular wilder
wiather, some of the nights Ice tunn
ing In thickness from one to two Inch
es." This prove conclusively thai we
are very likely to forget occurences as
time rolls by. However, no one yet
has claimed that wo ever had such a
raise iu the river a occured last Mon
day so early In November.

following;
A few mouths ng.) one of our promi
nent citizens, "just for a past time"
got into a game of cards In one of tho
saloons of this city with professional
"shuillurs of the cards." He soon got
rid of his cash on hand, but inspired
with a desire to regain his loss with
an additional Inspiration by the spirit
of old rye, ho borrowed f 10 from tho
bar fur which he gave hi note. But
that soon went the way of tils cash on
hand, so ho borrowed f 10 more of the
bar giving his i;oto for the same.
That till soon disappeared also.
Soon it was discovered that the last
jhJ note was not right aud a new note
w as demanded -the last f 10 note was
ciu m pled up and thrown away. Rut
the new note wa duly signed and as
appear without Inspection of its pro
visions. Out prominent citizen paid
the twenty dollars supposing he had
liquidated the debt. But lo and bo
hold, a note was presented by one of tho
parties who figured in the transaction,
for one thousand dollars duly signed
by our prominent citlen, who by tho
way is considered financially wel I
healed. This note ho refused to pay
and the matter came up before
his honor, Justice Hamlin, for la
vestlgatloii.
The Justice after hearing the testi
mony pro and con and upon the parties
making amicable settlement of tho
matter by giving up the one thousand
dollar note to the maker, dismissed
the care.
Hut by provisions of the statute of
Oregon, It I outdo tho duty of the dls-
tilct attorney or hi deputy and other
otllciuls named to bring action against
any one they may know to be guilty
of a violation of said statute regarding
gambling. I It Riddle, deputy dis
trict attorney, made complaint against
SO ltnlley and Job Howard before
Justice Hamlin fur unlawful gambling.
After a hearing In the case, the justice
bound them over to the next term of
court under bond of f250.
