mm,?, tamtam mm ftugcno City Guard, HATUKDAY J FN E 27. A WONDERFUL H AMUSE. Ik'pjtncr Gazette: Most of our people havo seen the shearing ma chine in which Mr. U. A. Herren, of this place is interested, or in other words, the clipper thut takes the place of eheara. Recently Mr. llcrrcn was summoned up to Soda Springs, Idaho, by Mr. Jlolliday, the general agent, to witness its work. Mr. Hcrren was present at one day's shearing. The plant could shear twenty five sheep at once and the day's work was 1,000 head, but nearly all of the shearers were inexperienced men who had never sheared at all. Ono Montana shear er of much experience in the old way, "sheared out" 120 head. The sheep when finished looked like they bad been turned out of wood, there wbb no cut sheep and no cut fibre. Wool sheared by machine commands cents per pound moro than that sheared by l and, and there is a saving of at least 1 pounds of wool to every sheep over tho old plan. These are items worth considering. Shearers will not fight the ma chine becauso it is not opposed to labor. It takes jus us many men ns the old plan of shearing, it is easier work and tho shearers gel the satno prico per head as when shearing by band. Thoy are under no cxpenso for buying shears, oil stones, files, oil, etc. Tho plant at Soda springs is owned bv a merchant, llocharges the sheepmen 7 cents per heud for shearing, 5 cunts goes to the shearer and two cents to tho machine Considering the saving of wool the bettor condition of tho wool when sheared and its greater value owing to the fact that no libro is injured in shearing, tho shearing machine is bound to become popular. One or more plants may be established in Morrow county by next season It is estimated that tho total coHt of the St Louis convention was near $1,000,000 and the democratic convention at Chicago will cost ob much. The democrats, of tho great states of Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa have practically unanimously de clared in favor of tho white metal. It is a regular tidal wave. All nickel-in tho-slot machines, all card machines and all devices w heroin nickels or dimes are de posited, havo been prohibited by the chief of polico of Seattle. Congressman Kills lias returned to tho slato, and pretrials in holding thut tho St. Louis platform is a sort of 10 to 1 expression on the financiul question. Ho probably interprets it to mean 1C for M Kinluy and the manufacturers and ono for tho people. The l)iilles Timee-Mountainecr says: During Hush times I'endle ton boomed itself, or ratluT in dulged in extravagances beyond its resources, and now has a bonded debt on which it is paying $1000 a mouth interest. 1 uudletoii is only one of tho few cities in tho rsorth west that undertook to grow be yond its resources. Mckinley s iinaucial record as illustruted by Puck: Voted for free coimigo of silver in 1877 opposed tho veto of the IManil silver uct in 1878: commended Cleveland in 1888, for urging re iuttl of tho ltland bill; advocated argcr purchases in 1SIK), Biiid "1 want tho dotihlo standard." Dicta ed the straddling plank in Ohio plalfrom. The Oregouian's assertion that no great paper is in favor of silver of course, is intentionally mislead ing. Among leading papers sup porting silver we mention among others tho Cincinnati l.nquirer St Louis Republic, San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle, D-'iiver Republican and tho Salt Lake Tribuno. Probably tho Oregouian thinks it the proper thing to pub lish false statements to deceive the public. The telegraphic- report of the Oregonian concerning tho New York democratic state convention says: "There is a Btrong under current among tho delegates here tonight for silver, and it is this, more than anything, that led to the forming of tho present plank and the delaying ot the sclco toon of electors." Kven silver is penetrating the fur Kast. The farmers, mechanics and laboring mou even in that section by November will see (hat tho free coinage of silver is necessary to have good times again. Garret A llobbart, tho republi can candidate lor vico president, in his business connections, says an exchange is closely identified with railroads and other big corpora tions. His first connection with railroads was brought about through his being appointed receiver for the New Jersey Midland Kailroad. He successfully adjusted its affairs, and was made receiver of the New York and Greenwood Lako Kail road. He reorganiied the company and put the road on a fair paying basis. In the adjustment of the - - "j?""""'g. "' mmmimmmwm affairs of the First Natioual Bank, for which he was receiver in 1880, he was most successful. Ho was also receiver for the Jersey City and Albany liailroad and for the Manhattan Ulcaching and Dyeing Company. Through his receiver ships Mr. Hoi art began to show for railroads, and secured stock in a number ot them and took an active part in their management, and is today cither president, director, or counsel for nearly fifty corpora tions. Socially Mr. Hobart is a inost affable and approachable man. He is the best of hosts and makes bis palatial home at the corner of Carroll and .Ellison streets tho ren dezvous for his friends. He is very wealtby and bis barrels is what is wanted. Coiiirnlssloiir-rs Court.
