The governmeut sung Isiut, Corvullis

bing machines have Ish-u attached to
the end of a hawser to give ull the
possible power.
Captain Hatch and Engineer Gwiuu
came up to thi city last evening and
remained hero until this afternoon
when they drove buck, taking some
supplies with them. Captain .Hatch
is of the opinio:: that tlie Corvallis
cannot be raised and that she will
have to remain where she is until the
water get low this summer when her
machiiiriy can be saved. The Corval
lis is valued at about -lMH). Site I
very clumsy, unmanageable and Is un
stable for work on tlie rapid currents
of tlie upper river. When her ma
chinery i removed what remain of
the old hull would lie of little vulue
and consequently of li'ltle loss to the
government. However, should the
river be deprived of a snag boat at this
time of ycur, when fieshets are likely
to occur casing obstruction in the
channel, navigation may tie greatly
returded.

Slightly Inpkki.mtk. Perhaps
about the hardest thing a person ever
had to do was to pay hi tuxes. The
Int'lcucies of the tax collecior' oflice
are hard to understand for some peo
ple, and the queries from many people
who call at the olllcc, and the in
definite letters of Inquiry often re
ceived from those who reside at a dis
tance, are very puzzling to the collec
tor and seldom can be explained sat
Istactorily to the taxpayers. A good
illustration of examples of tliis sort Is
found lu the case of a young lady over
at Floience who wrote to the collector
asking whut tlie taxes on hel lot
were. The collector replied by ask
ing for a desciiptiou ot the lots so Hint
he could Und them on the assessment
loll. The young lady wrote again,
saying thai she "did not know where
her lots were and mat sue nun hskcu
pnpa und he did not know." A gen
tleman in the East wrote to learn the
amount of tuxes on land which he
owned lu this county. The collector
wrote for a description of tlie prop
erty and the man replied, saying tlml
if the matter had not yet been solved
to ask Joel Ware ubout It. Another
man, who wanted lo know the amount
of his tax, asked the collector to st ud
him the lax roll.
