Three casos, those of Thomas J.

29, 18.10; Andrew I liutler, of
South Carolina, who died May 25,
1857. and James Hell, of Jsew
Hampshire, who died May 20, 1857
cost the covernment but IJ.50
each. This is the smallest amount
charged to the account of the death
of senators. Tho largest amount
exnendod in anv one case on this
account was on the occasion of the
death of Georco Hearst ofCalifor
nin. The items In that case when
collected and footed up, show an
acKrei;ato of $21,322.55. The
records of tho senate show no ex
penditure bv the oflice of tho secre
titry for the funeral of the late
Senator Leland Stanford, of Cali
fornift. Among tho curious things
which apHar from the record of
thco funeral expenses is that the
difference in the cost does not ap
pear to be governed by the distance
of the home ot tho deceased senator
from the capital. The cost of the
senatorial funerals seem to vary
for no reason whatever. Here are
a few figures to illustrate the vari
ations in cost, without regard to
tho distanco of tho senators home
from Washington:

In its lal issue the Oregon Mining
Journal gives credence to the story
that the name given to Kogue river
was derived from San Hoguo, the
Spanish saint, on whose day the
river w oaid to have been discov
ers! by the Spaniards. The story
is a fascinating one of adventurous
hut unsuccessful attempts to reach
llio shore, which was thought to lie
rich in gold mines, and we would
fain let il stand; but our innate
love of the truth, and our position
us the only religious newspaper in
oulhern Oregon, requires us to
give the facts. In the palmy days
of the Hudson Hay Co. their trap
pers penetrM! tin wilds of south

ot Indians so treacherous, unreli
able and dishonest that they were
sot down at incorrigible rogues.
The term rogue was accordingly
applied to the savaget by the Kng

tion of the Indians and the river.

SEATTLE'S MHTAEE.
Snokane Review: Itissingulur
that the people of Seattle could not
discern that their action in voting
for the Cedar river water scheme
was hostile to the best interests of
the citv. Seattle is already deeply
in debt, and the construction of
this new water system will add
$1,250,000 of floating warrants,
which are the worst kind of munic
ipal indebtedness. This, of course
will saddle the city with an addi
tional burdensome interest charg ,
and make it impossible to give the
people relief from excessive taxa
tion. This oction is all the more reck
less by reason that Seattle has now
one ot the besi water supplied hi
the United States. The water is
taken from Lake Washington, a
mountain lake of great depth and
purity. The city drainage flows
into the Sound, and an analysis
would show that the water of the
lake is as pure as when old Chief
Seattlo wub monarch of that sec
lion.
The overwhelming vote cast for
this bit of follv can only be at
tributed to a siiecies of inloxica
tion. The people are wild for the
expenditure of money upon public
works. It is anything to turn
money loose in the community
The consequence will be fell later
There will be a year or two of arti-
ficiul prosperity, and then will
come the period of municipal
headache.
