New York's rate of increase in population for 100 years was not quite 17 per cent, while that of Illinois men aced nearly 311 tier cent in 90 years, The other Western slates have done nearly as well. i A statistician of the German Government determined to make an investigation of tho superstition regarding Friday as an unlucky day. He has given tho world a book of queer tables and figures which prove that it is Monday, and not Friday, that is tho most fatal and unfortunate day of tho week, The New York democrats have nominated the following ticket: Judge lellur, of Auburn, was named unanimously for judge of the court of appneals. General Horatio King was named unani mously for secretary of tho state; John 15. Judson, of Fulton, was nominated for controller; Morton Chase, of Albany, was nominated by acclamation for attorney gen' cral; 1). C. Dow, of Schoharie, was nominated bv ttcclumation for state treasurer, and Kussel Stuart, of Onodaga, was nominated for stato engineer. When dotfH, cats and other ani mals carried long distances on cars and steamers, sometimes confined in bags and baskets, can, without asking any questions, find their way home, and birds traveling thousands of miles coino back year after year to the same nests, and carrier pigeons to their dovecotes, it is pretty suro that they know soran things to a knowledgo of I which no human being has vet at tained. Very ninny of the sampli- tnat Icive eomu forward recently lock sirciiiMh and were evidently picked prematurely; some othor-lots show dirty, rouh picking which Is exceed ingly uulortuuute at a time when prices are so low for good stock. Home growers have ued care In harvetlng their hops and we shall have some nice lots later. On tho I'acillc coast picking Is still In progrexsin the north ern sections, CMH-cialfy Oregon, but the California growers are through. No very reliable figure of the yield can be given us yet. Samples from there f the early pickings look nice, but are weak; better ipiality is promised later. There Is further agitation of the sub ject of freight rates from the coast and there is now strong probability that 11.50 s r 100 pounds w ill be the through rate to all Kimteru cities. Nothing has occurred to change the es timate of the Knglish crop from X2&U, IHXI old duly. Germany Is expected to have about two-thirds of last year's crop. Our local maiket Is lu a dull ami somewhat nominal condition. Hut few hops are here as yet and these are held at 7e 10c. as to Uality, later extreme. Kxsuters begin to inquire for samp.e lots which Is the only en couragement at present. Holders do not feel inclined to push sales, how ever, particularly If it requires con cessions in price to do business. No demand to speak of for lHJi hops, or older growths. Otsego, X Y, Itepuhltcan: There Is nothing new to tho hop market. A few hops have beeu bought but for the time of year the market Is almost stagnant. Growers are not willing to accept the low prices prevailing and little Is done. About I'M bales of the new crop havo been purchased, 20 at Sc,70al7Jc, 84 at 7o, and 16at0c.
