It was only a few minute- until a sup-
ply bad been obtained, and It was
given to each patient and both were
simiii vomiting, especially (irahaui,
who had Ihiii vomiting before he
-wallnued the milk and other drugs
administered. We Used no st-iimich
pump, of course, f.ir with the freedom
with which both we.e vomiting there
was no need.
The application of all the antidotes
know n to medical science were eontlii
t d unremittingly. The elli-et of the
drug w.'ii to stop the heart's action,
and iiij'-ctloiis ol morphine to ease the
pain and lilt ro glycerine to stimulate
the action of the heart w ere frivly ad
ministered, and for a lime wltii appar
ent gtsid etlect. At one time, two or
three minutes lx fore death came. Ins
pulse was almost normal and, appar
ently as strong as that of a healthy
H-rsoii, aud the physicians at the mo
ment fell that Ihero was a possibility
for li 1 111 to survive the dose. This
promise, however, was only a llitting
phantom, aud while Dr Wilson held
the patient's pulse, and Dr Farra was
preparing another dose of stimulant
the heart, without a llutter-suddenly
ceased to IkiiI, the moans of the sub
fcrcr ceased and W T I'cet fell back
lifeless on his pillow. During the two
hours and ten or llftccn minutes he
lived alter swallow ing the drug the
deail loan's sulleriiig was aw ful. The
etlect of the drug is so well known
to druggists and physicians that they
shudder almost when they think of the
struggling man's last moment. There
were continual retchings aud vomiting
and moans causcik tiy the awtul pain.
Ureal beads of perspiration stisal out
on ins person, and lie lsgged his phys
icians to administer a dose that would
inodiice his death, and end iiis misery.
From. t lie first be felt that he was
doomed, and a short time before the
end eauio lie told hi wife that he
could not live.
The dose swallowed by Mr. Peet and
Mr. Graham was tincture of aconite,
of which an ordinary dose Is three to
live drops. A well known physician,
speaking of the amount that could Is
swallowed iu safety, said ho would
hesitate to risk taking ten drops. It
is supposed that ' to 31) drops would
prove Intni. From tills, the fenrfiil
character of tho dose swallowed by
Mr. Peet can be readily uiiilersbssl,
when it is stated that he took an
ouni-e, which in chemical lore Is put
down at WO drops, euough to kill JlOO
men.
