Last evening about 10 o'clock the
rryof "Help! Iiel)!'! ran out upon

aultiK from the uper Ury of the

of startled citizen rushed In that di
rection. JoDuUoia of the JlolI'mun
Jloutw wan the Ural peraou lo atari up
the stairway and lie met W 11 i'ool, a
well-known citizen, coiniiitr down the
stairway on a run. Tool curried a
clublti his hand, hU clotlilnif wan
dlsarratiKed and blood wan flowing
(tulto frvt-ly from his face and head.
J'olloeuiaii I'ratt arrived in a few m lu
ll U-s and l'ool was taken to IJr li F
Hamuli a oHlce near by for iiiudUal
asHintauoe.
CousUble Llntou soon arrived on
the scene and the ofllcera then turned
thulr attention lo the caune of Ilia dis
turbance. Tliey entered the rooms of
Dr L W Brown, a phyalclan oftf!
standing, and found signs ofaHtrug
gle. lu one corner of the room they
found blood upon the wall, and a pool
of blood was also on the floor. A fur
ther fwnrtli revealed Dr Hrowu stowed
away In a close' In the hall-ways of
r .... . . i 1 1 .... .1
the Oil llUlllg. tie wan iHiiupumiviy
nlavil under arrest bv Constable Llti
ton. Before leavliiir lal olNce Dr
Hrowu had turned out the electric
lights.
Tram Invmtluatlon of the men
wounds It was found that l'ool hud
quite a number of severe Hashes, made
evidently uv the club, about his head
and race, itrown nan a twjiin cm u
his forehead, disfigured eyes and a
fingur that bore the apxaranw of
having been la 1'oors mourn. rmn
r men were much hurt, more than
flesh wounds, but Pool had evidently
gotten the wortor the row.
Itaaema that Pool Ims frwiuently
been sneudlng his venlngs lu aoeia
chat with Dr itrown In the hitter's office
Last evening as usual he says he wei
to Brown's office and, after paiwiiig the
time until 10 o'clock, remarked that
he would ro home. Brown said he
was not busy that evening and told
Pool not to be In a hurry. He then
mil un ami went Into his nrivate of
fice. Pool was silting with his back
to the door but he heard Itrown re en
tcrandthe next Instant felt a stun
tilng blaw on top of his head. Brown
struck him several more blows about
the head before he could cloee In upon
him. Pool waa staggered bv the
blows but finally itranpled with Brown
and the two rolled together upon the
floor. Iu the scuttle Pool succeeded in
wrenching the club away from Hrowu
and escaped foom the room.
The strangest part of the mnt'er Is
lhatbolu men tell l lie same story,
simiilv reversing their ixmltions,
Browu states that l'ool came lo his
office aa usual and that they chatted
pleasantly together until 10 o'clock
wtien root got up ami, seizing a ciuo
struck hliu on the head. He then
grappled with Pool aud, wrenching
llie club away irom nun, airucK nun
over the head with It. li did not see
Paol bring the club Into his office but
did not kuow how else It could have
gotteu there.
Neither man assigns any cause for
the other's attack, lull both are mem
tiers of the Myrtle Creek Mining aud
Milling Company and It Is believed by
many that the difficulty arose over
the conduct of the business of the
cumpauy. After Pool's wounds had
been examined, Dr Brown waa taken
before the officers and placed under
I10U0 bonds, with H B Kaklu as surety,
on the charge of assault with a dan
cerous weaiKin.
The examination will not lie held
for a few days In order to give time to
see how serious Poors wouuds will
prove to be.
The Glut) with which the bloody
work wss done Is a imrl of a shovel
handle, made of hard wood, 18 Inches
lu length, and sawed oil square at
each end.
The tiuestlon which puziles the
minds of the public greatest Is the
cause of the melee between Urown and
Pool and while many may surmise the
cause yet It may, like the duel lie
tweeu the Portland doctors recently,
never be known, aa it will doubtless be
acasaofuuo man's evidence against
another.
TUB CX.MII ATTANT8.
