Illinois is undoubtedly going to i be carried by the silverites. We are going to have a first-class i llourinj mill. Other thing much needed could be secured if the proper ellort was put forth. All Kastcrn Oregon and Wash ington rtioices over a bounteous rainfjll, insuring good crops Gcid prices are now hoped for. Home merchants are the best to (Ual with, and home manufactories should be encouraged und patron ized in preference to all others. The republicans, of Oregon, are trying to organize. there will doubtless be a livelv tussle to see whether gold or silver delegates will represent thijstate at the con vention in St. Louis. There aro many things that Ku gene can accomplish by applying push and energy, and there should bo no delay in making the appli cation. Both present and future welfare depend upon it. We will never get a boat to give us satisfactory servico on the river unt'l we get one whose owners are d rectly interested in Eugene and her welfare. We now have pre sented such an opportunity as should not be neglected. If this town is willing to give 1100,000 for an opposition railroad, tin re should be no hesiCsncy in sub.-cribing $4,000 to a boat which will bring us competition in freights and remove tho freight burden of which we have com plained for these many years. The people of Oregon are taxeJ for $ 3,000 to pay an attorney gen eral whose opinion goes no furt' er than, perhaps, to create a lew moments thought. This is one of the useless ollices the last legis lature might have abolished with out fear of being censured by the people. People throughout the world de mand canned fruit. No better fruit can be found than tin?, raised in the Willamette valley, and a Eugune cannery should "furnish a part of the supply needed. The best the world produces can be canned here. CAt Vancouver, Washington, is a creamery which pays out daily oUU to the farmers in that im mediate vicinity. If Eugene had one doing one-fifth as well it would be one of the best paying enter prises in our midst, and wJuld tend strongly to relieve the finan cial depression in this locality.
