' The Oregonian has raked out a chestnut of largo proHirtions in the ha4 of a contract for a lumbi r combine made in 1S7S to which l't'iinoycr was a party. The Gov ernor ill an accomplished dema gogue, but it fddoiii Icrs cutisisU nt than the Oregonian, and tins old musty contract only excite a won der na to what desjrate straits the ring crowd is in to lw compelled to to make use ot it. A Portland firm with whom we have business write us, date 151st of.Mav, that tliev have 2 feet of "dew" in their olliee. Well, they cannot justly complain, a the lsi.il of Oregon is that she never fails for rain or crops, ict alter all Oregon is not responsible for tho Columbia lloodn. It comes down from tho melting snows in Kastcrn Wash ington and Oregon, Idaho, Montana and llritish Columbia. A glance at the map will show that the Co lumbia river drains an immense area. A new process of reasoning Cana dian lumber i8lx'ingdeveloed,and bids fair to become nn immrtant industry to our Canadian friends. They have scoured the control of a German patent for tho treatment of beech and birch. Hy the new pro cess the sap is sweated out of the hoards by being placed in a green state in steam chambers for twelve days, then it is put into the drying chamber for two or three days, and by a chemical application the wood is stained throughout a rich wal nut color. No country in the world has BUch forests of licech and birch as Canada. A trial kiln has been built at Ottawa, and tho treatment is said to bo very successful. Some Portland dudes, nssit-Ul by the state laud ring who had an eye on tho profits to bo secured by lieu school lands, secured the passage of a law setting aside a tract of the Cascado rango for a timber reserve. This reserve in many places, and in Lane county, runs down on the west side and takes in valleys and settlements, thus preventing furth er settlement of desirable kiuls and holding the communities station ary. McKenziti bridgo precinct is in the reserve, the lino crossing near the mouth of lUue river. Hazel Dell precinct and a portion of Mid dle Fork precinct on tlio Willamette river are also in tho reserve. There are 53 townships in Lane county alone thus withdrawn from tho market. It is an outrage and the President should be etitioned to re store tho reserve to the public do main. Koseburg Heview: Several sx ple in thia county havo received tel egrams from Congressman Her mann stating that he has succeeded in having a largo part of the C.i c;ulo reserve restored to tho public domain. At the first glance we credited this statement, but on full investigation we can find no founda tion for it. Hermann's dispatch states that he went to the depart ment and secured this favorable uc tion, which is alone proof to any well posted man that ho has actu ally accomplished nothing in the matter. The president, and not the department, has . power to re store this reserve, or any part of it, to the puplic domain, and t hero is definite news from Washington that he has taken no action.
