The San Francisco mil-winter fair will bring a large number of dct-irablo jieople to the coatit. Many of them will invest and locate. Newspapers established in outly ing districts for the purpose of se curing land advertisements can change their politics as quick as any administration. Chinamen have been driven from the Marion county hop fields. There is enough white labor to do the work and Chinese competition will not be allowed. A few hop growers are contract ing their hop crop. The price, 15 to 17 cents, gives the grower a fair profit. Most of the hop men have secured, picking money by some turn or other. The notorious John Davenport, who was wont to supervise elec tions in New York City, will soon lose his job. The Federal election law giving supervisors authority to override the representatives of the states will soon be repealed. The projectors of the suspended Portland savings bank had great heads. They subscribed 1250,000 capital stock, they may not have paid all in, and trusting deposi tors gave them 2,5O0,00O to ojier ate on. Here is a case where the outside money made the game and as usual the outsiders get the worst of it We are getting gold from foreign countries because they must have produce and breadstuff. The only way they can get the gold back is to collect on our securities they hold or in the course of trade. The goldbug would have you believe that laws can be paed to retain the precious metal, contrary to the natural law of supply and demand. As well try to legislate John Doe rich and keep him to. - Secretary Carlisle is on the right track when he proposes to set the mint at work coining silver bul liun in the treasury. Now let him pay it out the same as gold and the vexed question of monometalium or bimeUlUm will be partially set tled. The next congress will put on the finishing touches, and many of the present congressmen who have shirked their dutv and pledg es will not be there to vote. ttoilueu Rttival. The r.uff.ilo Courier of tho 30th ult. says tint in Indianapolis, Ind., several largo plants have Incre.ve-l their working forces am. car work which discharged a good many men when the panic began are now run ning with nearly tlie usual number, Other inJustric which had u-j-niled activity arc preparing tn resume on September 1. Iiy the starting up of mills and furnaces in Pittsburg nearly 7000 men have been set at work during the patt week. Two banks hare resumed business in Texas and two in Colo rado. The iueen City bank of this place opens tomorrow and the Wag ner Car Shops will work 500 men six days a week after tomorrow. These arc a few ol the encouraging features of the situation. They are pretty good evidence that confi dence is being instilled into the business interests of the country. Under a gold standard gold fixes its own price. A gold dollar con tains 231 grains of pure metal, and that weight of metal is the unit of value in the United States. There is nothiag for it to rest upon it is final. The prices of all other com modities are fixed by the number of grains of gold counted in dol lars they will bring in the mar ket. If gold becomes scarcer, in comparison with the demands of trade, it also becomes dearer in comparison with other commodi ties. The man who wants dollars must give up more of merchandise to get them. The prices of the merchandise articles fall corres pondingly. Under our present system, which is in effect a copy of what they have in all European countries, tho grain of gold is tlie final unit of value. Everything is measured by it. It may be said to have no price since it is the price. The McKinley bill, m order to "protect" the farmer and furnish a "home market" for his products, "protected" wheat to the extent of 25 cents per bushel. At that timo wheat was worth 80 to 85 cents per buthel. Instead of raising the price of the farmers' wheat and fur nishing a home market as tho Re publicans promised, it has had ex actly the opposite (fleet. There is no home market to speak of, and the price of wheat has gone down until it is but little more than half as much as it was at the time of tho pas-sage of the wonderful Mc Kinley bill. The price of wool, al though strengthened by a high tar iff, has gone down iu the same pro portion. That confidence has been restor ed is evident from the re-opening of a large number of banks ami commercial houses that BUBjiendod last month. In all 03 national banks have resumed business, and 50 others are expected to resume within the next two weeks. Even in Colorado the suspended banks are re-opening their doors, eight of the 6S referred to being located in that state.. The Telegram says: District At torney Murphy and Marshal Gra dy have quit worrying about con firmation. The senate looked those gentlemen over and stamped O K n them. The same was done with Collector Page, of Astoria. But there seems to be a hitch in Collec tor Black's confirmation. The chances are that Black will alo come out of the big end of the horn. One reason why times are so hard is that men who could pay their bills take advantage of the hard times and plead no available resources. If every man who could would pay his bills, money would be far more plentiful than it now is and business would be better. Ben E. Snits, of Ellensburg and Roslyn banks has assigned all his unincumbered property ia King, Kittitas, Klicitat, Douglai and Yakima counties, Wash., for the benefit of his bank creditors. The assignment is satisfactory l-5 the credits r. The unemployed of Portland vented their discontent on Labor day. 0
