The uncertainty as to the acreage that will Ut picked and the quamy of the crop saved on account of the presence oi hop lice, have made buy ers cautious. They cannot lie ex u..tiil to advance monev when the hops may not le picked, or, if picked, not merchantable. The present school year will witness an increased attendance at the State University. The institu tion has a reputation for thorough work that will draw students from all parts of tho state. Tho abun dant crops will assist many young men in their efforts to obtain an education. The university build ings have been thoroughly repaired and renovated and made comforta ble for teachers and students. Tho lioard of Regents has generally advertised the university through out the state, and when its portals open for the reception of students, Sept. 21, the advantage will be np parent. The Salem Journal says that "Hon. Itinger Hermann's chances for a fourth term are not improved by tho advocacy of some newspa hts that seem to imagine that ho is the only contingency." Oh, no, he isn't the "only contingency." Several patriots, even in Marion county, would lx; quite willing to take lint job, yet the chances are that they will all lie left at homo, and that (linger, tho handshaker, will at least he renominated. Dis patch. Tho Telegram pertinently re marks that when you find a man oil'ering you something for nothing, and especially if that man is a com parative stranger, representing some "building and loan association," or something of that sort, ln'waro of him. lhat is not the way men are accustomed to doing. Men who cxiect and try to obtain i greater loan than their proerty is good se curity for, or who expect to double an investment in three or four years by obtaining six per cent, in terest, are "suckers," The Astoria Town Talk, discuss ing congressional probabilities, says: While it is the general opin ion that Hermann should bo re nominated, we think if the "cold deck" is examined ho will not bo found in it. Not that he would not like to serve the ju'ople another term, but because he cannot in the face of arrangements Mssibly made about the time of last election. The county of Sokano, Wash., has leen advertising $1,000 of county bonds, and the licst offer they can get is on a basis of a dis count of j 1:1,000. The Imnds car fi per cent, interest, hence it wns thought by some that they ought to sell at liar. The county "is about $175,000 in debt, and it is for the purpose of refunding this indebt edness that the bonds are to be sold. Roscburg Review : Douglas county will soon Ik able to build a fruit palace, but unlike the one Sa lem expects to erect this fall.
