When hunting neur Mudixon, Wis., be

by the body of a duck which had fallen
at bis feet from the air about 200 yards
above him.
"A duck sometimes when wounded
will circle around in the air and try to
get as high as possible," said he. "I
had wounded a big mallard, and it
started to circle upward directly over
my head. I had a churge of buckshot

out of range I tired. One of the bul

"A friend of mine named Bancroft,
when duck hunting in Florida, also had
a clone call. It was just getting dark,
and we were waiting in our boats be
hind a pile of weeds for the ducks to
appear. We heurd something come

suddenly raised liMiiMclf in his boat to
see what it was. It was a teal duck.
The bird must have been going at Uie

the forehead und knocked him over
into the water. The blow was so hard
it stunned him, and had I not been
there to pull him out he certainly would
have drowned. The blow killed the
duck. When I Ashed it out of the
water I found the bird's breastbone
broken. Chicago Tribune.

There are now three Hinlaot thermometers
In common ue throughout the world; but th
form Invented by frofttaur Daniel Fahrvn
beil, an iugcuious Uernian in th year 1TUU,
and from whom the luttrumeut has her a
turned, is the one generally employed la this
country, and with which nearly every Intel
ligent family iu the land ia provided, though
the "centigrade thermouieUtr" is really the
moat convenient and is now adopted in all
countries as the standard seal for scieutilitt
reference; and like th metric syateiu, its
general use in this country la doubtleas merely
a queatiou of time.
Mercury boils and vaporizes at a temper,
ture ot UU dega. Fahrenheit and for obtain
ing any higher temperature than this a me
tal lio instrument called th pyrometer is
mad use of, but its indlvatioua ar unreli
able, aud yet it remains to discover torn
aiore accurate method of measuring degrees
of beat higher tbsu tSOU dega. by the Fahreu
belt tueriuoiuetor. At a temiei-ature of St
degs. below sero mercury freeaes and be
comes a solid mass malleable under the ham
Dior, aud for lower tuieraturea, pure alco
hol (spirits of wiue) colored red with car
mine, is usually employed, but ai ia th case
of th pryometer, its indications cannot be
dependod uin for accuracy. Fahrenheit
was not alow to recognise 'th advautage
possessed by mercury aa a fluid for the tub
of th thermometer. Mercury, aa aa excel
lent conductor of beat, is vastly more sus
ceptible to the changes of temieratur than
all other fluids. It is much more easily ob
tained in a perfectly pure state than alcohol,
which, even when prercd with th greatest
care, often contains air as well as other ad
mixtures; and alcohol is sometimes rendered
thick by great degrees of cold, aud under th
higher degrees of beat it expands excessively
and uu uniformly.
TUB ZERO POINT.
In tba Fahrenheit thermometers the spac
between the freezing and boiling point of
water is divided into 180 equal porta or de
grees, the former being Si dega. and the latter
HI 3 dega. above tero, which was so called by
the inventor from th fact that he supiKMed
It to indicate th point of abaolut cold, or
the very lowest degre that could be pro
duced and measured by any instrument. Bui
the lowest degree of cold possible to be ob
tained is uow estiiiittttilo be &Si dogs., and
th greatest artitlciol cold ever produced is
S3 degs. by th Fahrenheit thermometer.
The tero point of a thermometer does uot in
dicate the total absence of beat, as commonly
supiKised aud the term .ins to imply, for aa
absolute sero of temperature has never yet
been attained, aud has only been approxi
mately determined, though it is considered
"convenient as an ideal sUirting wiut." Th
sero of a Fuhrunheit thermometer is th
temperature of a mixture of in and common
suit, which is usually employed ia the opera
tion of freezing ice cream,
Tbe zero point of a thermometer should al

ment is known to be correct. To do this im

AN OLD PHYSIC GARDEN.
It Was I.aaard tn tha Apollirrarles' Com

The pmp, sftl to ham! over to the

ha l one good nvult. It has elicited
the fact, to the great relief of all lovers
of plc-turwiiie bunion, that the condi
tions of its UtnicMt save it from Uie
fale which has overtaken Gerard's gar
den in llollioru, and Tradeaeaiifs gar
den at lAiubeth, Its older rivals. The
garden, which is the oldest of its kind
tu England, was leaHl to the Apothe
caries' company by !ord Chcyne In
1073, and iu 1722 was finally preseuted
to the couiany by Kir Hans Sloane,
whose statue, erected eleven years later,
still adorns it.
Evelyn alludes in lis diary to a visit
to "the AH)thecaries' garden of sim
ples," "well stocked with plants under
Morgan, a skillful botanist," and he
mentions among the rarities he saw
there "the tree bearing Jesuit's bark,
wlu'eh has done such wonders iu quar
tan ague," a tulip tree and a tea
tlirub. Evelyn's .friend Pepys, too,
must have delighted iu the wonders of
the garden.
He records with patriotic pride that
"we have the best walks of gravell in
the world, France having none, nor It
aly, and our green of our bowling al
leeis is better than any they have," and
he approves the existing "fashion of
gardens to make them plain," "only
with a little statues, or pots, which
may be handsome, and so tilled with
another pot of such or such a flower or
greene as tlie season oi uie year win
bear."
Here at Chelsea was made, In 1GSI,
one of the earliest attempts to over
come the English seasons, and rear the
Dowers of sunnier chines by the aid of
artificial heat, which wiis obtained by
placing charcoal embers iu a hole in the
floor of the greenhouse. During the
management of Philip Miller, "the
Prince of Gardeners" (from 17?3 to
"I), the gardens acquired an almont
unrivalled reputation throughout Eu
rope. The are happily safe in tlie
custody of the Apothecaries' society,
by whom they are maintained for tlie
use of the medical schools odiondou.

Among the chief tocinl conditions
necessary for conversation are these:
The members of any social group must
neither be too Intimate, too numerous,
nor too unequal. In family life, men
and women, long familiar, are apt to
know too much and to hope too little.
Few, Indeed, are the strictly domestic
circle In which mental energy would
be found for much sustained or ani
mate conversation of the right sort
Some may be too selllsh to exert them
selves there. Others are chilled by
their surroundings. They find them
selves underestimated; or, worst', they
know every one there so well again
and again have they traveled over each
other's minds; or they perhaps remem
ber the desolating saying that "there is
In every man or woman something
whicli, If you knew It, would make you
hate them." For purposes of conver
sation a man will often find himself
more at home when away from home,
