It is in all about thirty miles lonp, aud it empties Into the Potomac. It rises In tba loot-hills of tho Rlue RidK, up ncr tho Jlarylund line, and empties into the Potomaa at Georgetown, It forms the boundary between tho cdy of Waahinirton and tha quaint old city of Georgetown. It wa up Rock creek that the sloop bearing George WashmgUin when he cama to buy the site for the capitol sailed one raw spring morning near ly one hundred years atrn, and tied up at tho wharf about where Fennaylvania ave nue now crosso the atream. On the wator of Rock creek alio Fulton first tried his modol for steamboat while be was living with Joel Barlow at Kalorama. ) Tho land wkich is to bo dedicated to a park comprise! about twenty-five Hundred acre, moat of which is rocky and precipi tous. A very araall portion of this land is level. It is cu4 by deep ravines, by little tributary streams, and is for tho most part heavily wooded. The rest of the city filed in after them very naturally. There are few louses along the valley. Although the building sites are the finest any where arounl Wash ington and occur at every bend and sweet of the stream, people seem to have shunned the borders of Rock creek becausi of the expense necessary in clearing tiem of heavy timber. Towering oak trea three and four foot through are verf conmon in this forest. Sycamore, elms, tulp trees, red cedars, hickories, black wahuts and almost evory species of forest growth com mon to the temperate zone are to e found. The Rock creek valley is the favorite re sort of fox hunters. There are here and there, not far from the city, foxes to be chased, and out afow miles fox hunting is a very common sport. The fashionable fox hunters in Washington city invariably di rect their "runs" across the valley towards country club. The negrces of the vicinity have always roearded tho valley as good coon hunting pround, and it is dow and then still common to soj a band of col ored folks following their coon dogs throug b the woods, lighting up tho column with the flame of their torches. . f t ; In sonio places the creek is very much A like a Rocky Mountain stream tumhVtrig through its canyons. It will tuko. sevoral years and a 0Tcat deal of money to accomplish this, but when done Washington and the Nation will have a park in which all Americans may bilie prulo. The land along the stream has been hold for many years at high figures in expectation that, soonor or later, either by private entorpriso or Government out lay, a miid would bo built which should bring all this outlying country withiu tha reach of woalthy people who would prefor to build their villa sites out of town and roach the departments and the capital on stoiim cars, rather thau livo in the city. The Uovornmont pays for tho 3,500 acres of land tnkon all the way from fSOO to M.000 an aero, the entire appropriation for the laud being a million and a half. It will not cost halt of this to mako a park imme diately availnblo for a pleasure ground by tho building of a few good roads. This be ing dono a great deal of the territory ad joining the park will be available for build ing sites for pcoplo who want to live out of town. Tho aim is to nuiko this park a rival.
