SUPPLEMENT.
Asking for a Recouut.

by Governor Pennoyer lo Hon. J. W. Noble,
secretary o.' the interior, at Washington, D.
C, in reference to a recount of tbe whole
State:
Sl'ATK or Obkoon,
tlKCCTIVK DltPABTMKNT,
Nileui. September 15, 1890.
Hon. John W. Noble, Secretaiy Interior,
Washington, D. C.: Conclusive evidence
as to a faulty centra of ibe connty of Mult
noDirtb and tbe city of Salem influenced tbe
bnrean official to order a recount, which
demonstrated the great inaccuracy of the
first count. Fully aa conclusive evidence aa
to a faulty eensu of the remainder of tbe
state demands for it a recount also, in order
that Oregon's just representation in congress
and an equitable representation in the state
legiMUtnre may no t be imperiled. The peo
ple of the alate of Oregon, upon ample proo
of the inefficient work of the census bureau
in its fint effort, and in behalf of tbe sacred
liht of just representation, both in congress
and the otuto legislature, demand a recount.

Rev. J. BelHrood haa issued a circular in
regard lo "Ilspeland," tract of land oppo
site Cbampoeg, on the west bank of tbe
Willamette, where he ia establishing a Chris
tian colony. The old gentleman states: "A
person of itdnatrial babita having only a
very small capital, by renting a few acres of
land there, and keeping poultry, pigeons,
rabbit am! bees, and raising small fruits
and vegetable, could earn a comfortable
living and hive bom for life. No person
need apply br residence there wbo ia not of
good, moral tharacter, strictly temperate in
all thing, aid will regularly attend divine
worship in lope church, Hopeland. The
property will b under the control of the
Protestant Biaoopal church." I

Colfax Commoner.
A little over year ago Edward Jonea,
living on Alkali Flat, bought a 160 acre
tract of land from tbe railroad company,
paying $ 70 therefor. The entire piece was
broken and sown to grain ibis year, which
has yielded 4,91)0 bushels. At the present
market price thia is worth $'2,6'28 The
whole cost of fencing tbe land, breaking,
seeding, harvesting and hauling tbe grain to
market is estimated at $1,750, which, added
to the cost of the land, makes f 2,530, thus
leaving Mr. Jones a clear profit of $!8 from
the first crop, after paying for tbe laud, im
provements and all expenses incident to
raising and marketing tbe crop. Does farm
ing pay in the Palouse country? Well, we
should think it does.
Farmers in Ireland have given up all bop
of tbe potato crop, the disease making it nol
worth digging. In some places they are
plowing the potato land and sowing turnips
or setting out cabbage planta, in tbe hope ol
growing some food lor Ibe ootuiug year. In
many oases where the tops ure large no po
tatoes are found al the roots. In Cork tbe
price of potatoes is now three times as high
as it waa at this season last year.
