Van Doorman' great redwood tree for ex hibition at the World'i Fair ha arrived here from Portcrville. Three flat cant were required to haul the exhibit to Ibe oity, i it weigh bou 70,000 pouuda. It will be exhibited at the Mechan ic 'a Fair prior to being shipped to Chicago. The section of the tree wo taken from Mammoth forest, in Tulare connly, Califor bia, within thirty-five miles of the thriving end rapidly growing town of Porterville. It was ont from a forext giant 312 feet in height, growing at an altitude of 6.325 feet, and was severed from the parent tre twenty-oight feet above Ihe stunip, at which point it measure sixtr feet in circumference. Of course the tree was conaiderably larger at the stomp, but a section from the base conld not be ont for the purpose of transportation, for the simple reaaou that a cut was taken of twenty feet diametrically, and nine feet in height, and that was the maximum of the railway freight limit on flat cars. The entire piece of wood cornets of six teen sections, as follows: The lower section is 1 toot in height by 20 feet in diameter, all in one aolid cut, weighing 19,728 pounds. This will be arranged as a floor, placed on nine elegantly carved and enormous pedes tals made of the wood of the same tree. The next cut Is 7 feet inieigbt by 20 feet in diameter, which is hollowed out and will be placed on the floor cut. The ahole of this remarkable ouriosity will form a aort of hall, and will accommodate about 100 people, and will be entered by a swinging door made ont of one of the portions of the second section Two hundred and fifty iucandescent light will illuminate the section inside and out, and a number of skilled wood-workers have, been engnged to manufacture souvenirs for distribution among the visitors.
