The Age of tha Spinster.
There is no period of life that deter
mines old muidhood; the habit of each
hidividual is to move the figure along
the scale of years as time goes on so that
a girl of 16,,who considers 3$ a Cqld and
hopeless age for a spinster, is certain to
change her mind anj fix upon 27 as the
year of desolation when 25 has been
reached. Thus, by degrees, 87 is come

A Test for Kyiamstry.
The best test for symmetry is simply
turning a man with his face to the wall.
If he be perfectly molded and symmetri
cally made his chest will just touch the
wall, his nose will be four inches away,
thighs five inches and the ends of his toes
three inches. The development of a man's
physical qualities is a most important
matter, and is one that is overlooked the
world over, and seldom is it that you will
find a man who can stand the test.

HABIT AND CUSTOM.
Every Man nr Woman la More or li Their
Mave.
While tho teaching of the philoso
phers are opposed to the recognition of
the old Miff that man Is largoly a
creature of habit and hold that all
human actions should be governed
solely hy the llghtof reason and not by
habit or custom, or even the force of
example, still experience has taught
quite a different lesson and has fully
demonstrated the existence of an organio
weakness in human nature that unfit
him for a purely philosophical existence
sad mukes him a slave to circumstances
or to tho surroundings in the midst of
which his lot Is cast
From very boyhood man is made to
feol the force of habit and custom. If
carefully schooled he Is lured Into the
acquisition of wholesome traits and
habits that influence bis character and
line of thought as effectually as they
shape his aftor career and school his In
tellect. Youth being more susceptible
to good or bud influences, the ground
work then laid down is more apt to be
enduring than either the lessons or ex
periences of after life.
Thus, even in the training of the
young, the prlne.iplo of man's slavery to
habit is admitted and recognized, al
though the effort is then made to so
shape that Inlmrn proclivity as to un
fetter the mind as much as possible
from the things Incidental to evcry-day
Ufo, and give it freer scope In more Im
portant concerns.
The natural proclivity to fixed habits
and customs Is responsible for national
traits, local peculiarities, In fact for all
the endless variety that gives Interest
to travel and investigation. Hut it Is la
the study of Individual character that
tho natural weakness becomes most ap
parent The man that has snent the trrouti'r
hart of his life ln mercantile pursuits
nas so completely identtlled himself
with his business that daily attention to
it has become an essential to his health
and happiness. Although success has
afforded him ample means wherewith to
retire from the cares of active participa
tion in commerce, still the dally routine
of his office or counting houso has bo
come so much a part of his existence
that to drop it out of his Ufo would be to
revolutionize his whole being and prob
ably rob him of the one thing that buoys
him up.
It is the realization of this necessary
continuance of a daily routine that keops
so many in apparently laborious and
wearing occupations long after it has be
come apparent that there Is no longer
any material necessity for such applica
tion. The same thing Is apparent ln a pro
fessional career as also in mercantile
Ufo, and in most men it is Mm rcallza?
tlon that age or infirmity has Anally un
fitted them to longer fill the accustomed
place that hastens the final break-up In
thnir lives and so froquontly renders the
ixtlnguishment of life's flumo sudden in
thosu whoso lives have been most active.

A Singular OolnoUlenoe.
A remarkable coincidence in accidents
to two of his sons has occurred in th
family of John Marilla, in the East End,
Louisville. The two brothers, Emlle and
George Marilla, were victims of exactly
similar accidents at widely separated
places at the same moment Entile
Marilla is 18 years old and works at the
Short Line shops at the head of Jeffer
son street. George Marilla is 15 years
old and works at Curd & Stinton'i
saddlfry store, on Main street
At precisely 4 o'clock in the afternoon
Emile was at work near a large circular
saw uttending to his duties. Suddenly
he slipped, and as he fell his hand struck
against the rapidly revolving saw, the
palm of the hand turned toward the edge.
The teeth tore the entire inner portion of
his hand away from the bone, leaving a
seriotu and painful wound. At the sain
hour George Marilla was at work at the
saddlery store on Main street. He also,
while working at bis place, suddenly
slipped and fell, striking his hand against
a small saw used in collar making. The
palm of the hand was caught and th
oft flesh was torn from the bony frame.
The boys live at No. 1,530 Pope street,
and both were removed to their home,
where they arrived about the same time.
Dr. W. O. Roberta was immediately sum
moned and dressed the injured hands,
both of which were injured in the same
place and to the same extent, and both
were the extremities of the right arm.

Found, a Rembrandt.
The supposed discovery of a Rem
brandt representing Abrahamand thetwo
angels has made a stir in artistic circles.
The picture was included in the sale of
the furniture of a widow without heirs
ordered by the state, and the state expert
fixed the upset price at 200 francs. A
Paris picture dealer, who had had a hint
from the deceased's doctor, bid up to
4,000 francs, and the picture was knocked
down to him. The state expert had de
scribed the subject as Jesus and the dis
ciples at Emmaus, a strange blunder,
considering that the chief figure was an
elderly man with a long white beard.
The story does not end here. The au
thorities, after all, are not agreed, soni
insisting that the work is a Rembrandt,
others arguing that the signature and
date, 1056, are a forgery. I asked a con
noisseur on Monday what the picture
was w orth. "That depends on circum
stances," he replied; "if it is by Rem
brandt 300.000 francs, if by one of his
pupils 150,000 francs, for anyhow it is a
fine old picture." It seems odd that, the
artistic meri being the same, the value
should be only half in oue case what it
would be in the other. Cor. London

GORMANDIZING,
ar overoatlng, or tho partaking of too rich and indigestible food,
is a oommou causu of discomfort and Buffering. To relieve the
Btomauh and bowels from such overloading, a full doso of Dr.
Pierce' Purgative Pellots is tho best remedy. They operate gently,
yet thoroughly and without griping, nausea, or other unpleasant t
effects.
If tho too free indulgence in such intemperate eating has deranged
digestion, causing dyspepsia and biliousness, attended with sense of
fullness or bloating after eating, coated tongue, bitter or bad taste in
mouth in morning, on arising, drowsiness after meals, indescribable feel
ing of dread, or of impending calamity and hypochondria then vou
need to follov up the use of tho Pellets with Dr. Pierce's Oolden Med
ical Discovery, to tone up the stomach, invigorate the liver, and set all
the processes of digestion at work. While curing indigestion, it purifies
tho blood, cleansing the system from all humors and blood-poisons no
matter of what namo or nature, or from what cause arising. Unlike
othor blood-purifiers, it operates equally well at any season ol the year.
It contains no alcohol to inebriate ; no syrup or sugar to ferment in the
stomach and deranc;o digestion. On tho contrary, it retards fermenta
tion and promotes all the digestive and assimilative processes. It is as
wonderful and peculiar in curative results as in its chemical composition.
There is nothing similar to it in composition or approaching it in results.
Therefore, don't be duped and induced to take some substitute, said to
bo "just as good," that the dealer may make a larger profit.
