EUGENE CITY GUARD. I. U t'AJIPBKLL. . . froprlcMr. EUGENE CITY. OREGON. THE ARIZONA KICKER. A lUuiuar of rolut Whloh th EhI Cm Hal Duplloata. W extract th following from tin ImI lulu of tht Arizona Kicker: Dim't Kxow it wai Loaded. Smith A Davis' minstrels wart billed for an entertainment at Moniexuma Hull last Friday night, but It didn't com off. Instead of that tba whole gang Hipped ell. They cams bar with th avowed Intention of doing business without the Id of the Kb Iter. None of thorn called at the ofllce and they bad no courtesies to extend. We advised tbe poople to taj awaj. On Friday morning, sovon members of the gang entered our ofllo to domand satisfaction. They didn't know It was loaded. It waa, however, and when it went off lotne of tbe bird' hot got In on each nd every one of the rang, and we bad to tap on or th end men with an ax-bolve In addition. W baven't any one In this town who make a specialty of digging load out of th human system, and at noon thny started for Tombstone to give a man there I week'i job. UU jnrkdl which In Moxl can for saying: "The Kicker la always loaded." Wi Torn Yon Ho. SI weeks ago in an named Scott opened a grocery store en Comanche street, and when we casu ally dropped in and niontlonnd th fact that the Kicker win the best advertising medium In the West, bo didn't nthus. We kmiw thero was something wrong about blin, and w sent bis description to tho sixty-four sheriffs and chlofs of polloo who are constantly In corn muni' eatlon with us. Last Thursday, Just Iter w bad gon to press, dotectlv arrived from lioulsvlllesnd collared Mr. Hoott, who Is a defaulting county treas urer, lie ban left us, and w bought th tuck of groceries at about twonty-twe cents on th dollar. Had Mr. Scott ad vertised be would doubtless bav built up a large and profltabl business; bat b took wrong view of It and will probably go to Slate prison for fifteen or twenty years. Poo a Ot.t PaijtI W never refer to our contemporary down th struct If we oan avoid It. In th first plao be hasn't got enough brains or ofllce to deserv th title, and in the next he la a poor, palsied old man who Is gradually dying of envy and starvation, and w shall have to foot bis burial expense whon be dooa go. The other week we men tioned our private graveyard and its Ave occupant. This so excited the jealousy of the old rello of th seventeenth cen tury that b borrowed a rvol ver and took trip around town yesterday In search of blood. He finally found on of Colonol MoCrankeu's Digger Indians aaloep In th aun and opened fir on him from a distance of four feet lie didn't even wake th redskin up, and Judge Tall man, who objected to to much nols round bit hoiiso, went out and drove poor old palsy away with broom. Ws are sorry for hi in. They say h cried wbllo going back to bis ono-hors alleged newnpspor, and no wonder. II should never hav com West. II oarae, as we ascertained, to evade ar rest for bigamy, but b should hav taken aom othor route. When natur fit a man to raU hollyhocks In New Jersey, h has no business coming west to try to rain that oilier product. Not His Fapi.t. A nmmher of our townspeople hav expressed the hop that wa would pitch Into Dr. Htughorn, the popular druggist, for killing old man Nlew by putting up trsnnlo for qui nine in a prescription. We shall do nothing of the sort Th doctor ha not only increased his advertising one-half this week, but has subscribed for flv copies of th Th Kicker to send away. While this of course does not Influence a in th lit, we know from personal observation that th doctor is a very busy nisn, and that th room in hit tor la limited. He ho no choice but to keep many different sort of powders In the same drawer and It is only to be expected that mistake should htppon bow and then. Furthermore, who was old Blow, any bow? A ly, dissipated vagabond, whom the boys would bav hung in th course of a few week at best In foot ing bis funeral expenses th doctor bos ahown himself vary liberal and fair minded, and be hat shown himself In various ways that bt belongs to that olass wantod In this town to build It up. No Kxtiu CitARor In tblt Issut wt publish the full particulars of two exe cutions, one lull delivery, three shooting affray, one highway robbery, two fist flghu, threo dog flghta, on found dead, drowning accident th arrest of a road gent the death of two Mexicans in the late blr-tard and th stealing ol Judge Sprout's four-mul team. Is it any won der that the peopl of Arlsona can't wait for th Kicker to be issued each week, aud that dosut of them roost on our door-steps all night Wedueadty Bight to get copies th first thing Thurs day morning? TO PfttVCNT DECAY. a ti-.i nr I tnm.t Inipartanr I th Cnnaiiruers of Stone. Prof. Tetmajer, of Zurich, one of th irreatost living authorltle on auch ub- JeoU, made rei-ently an investigation of th decay of stone 1 build! nj. and the best wean of pre- I venting IL Many of our readers WU7 remomlier VIollet-le-Due' atrlklng" ob ! serration in regard to th same matter, Jeducmd from an immense experience, and Prof. Tetmajer' conclusions agree enUroly with his. According to both, the freezing of water In the pores ol stone Is the principal causo of lu disin tegration. Even the chomleal effect of tho air In largo cities, due, it is sup point, to the sulphurous acid contained in It, probably act through the rain water, by which tho add is washed out of tbe air. and carried to the ttono, so that anv thing that will prevent tho ao- cumulation of water in the pores is likely to diminish chemical action, a well as risk from frost Contrary to the common Idea, tho most porous stones aro. If properly used, not necessarily most subject to disintegration. If tha water fulling on tho stone has a chance to escape freely, frost will not injure It, but if the movement of the water in tba nores Is checked, so that it accumu lates anywhero, tho frooning of ibis accumulation will gradually destroy event strong stone. Proofs of this may be found In nearly all buildings faood with sand or llmestono. If tho base, or water-table, or even a bolt at any height is of harder stone, tho freestone just above it will bo found to disinte grate after a fow years, owing to the chocking of tho downward movemontol the water In tho poros. So, on the under side of a projecting moulding, or bal cony, where the water accumulates by gravitation, but it prevented by capil lary attraction from dropping off, flakes of stone will soon be observed to sepa rate and fail; and soft stone near the ground, whoro moisture drawn up from the earth by capillary attraction, Joined with tbe double effect of the rain, and the spattering of rain-water from the ground, keep it particularly moist, soon purlahes. Tho decay ot stone shows it self In two ways. With stratified stone, tho frost dislodges flakes and plates, by working In tho natural seams, but with a massive, homogenous stone, the effoot of freezing is to dissever the particles of sand, or tbe crystals of carbonate of lime, so that, although the stone may tor long time bold together nearly in its original shape, the rubbing of the hand will dislodgo a shower of sand, and the profiles and arrifes Insensibly lose their Bbarpness. The cure for this Is, In the first place, to treat the stone with skill. A soft ston, If laid above t hard course, should bo protected from the rain, so that no water will descend through its pores, to be cheoked by the bard layer; tho lower courses of buildings should bo of as bard and impervious material as possiblo. and vertical joints should lie packed bard with cement and jointed, as imper fect joints collect much water, which soaks afterwards into the stones on each side; and all projecting courses should have a drip, which will collect tho water in tho stone and enable It to drop oh. In cases where nothing better can be done, the old process of Eaiire A Kessler, now of Clermont-Ferrand, in France, by which the stone is Impregnated with fluosillcatos of various substances, ao cordlng to the character of the stone to be treated, is the only ono which has proved Itself successful. Something might be done, perhaps, with lime-water, and it is curious that where base-moulding baa b gun to decay, the portions under the vertical joints of tho course of stone Immediately above, from which small quantities of dissolved lime have proba bly washed down on tbe moulding be neath, are preserved, while the inter mediate portions are disintegrated; but this application has not been studied to successful result. In the case of stone not built into a wall, It is often found that while damp with quarry-sap, or soaked with rain-water, a sudden frost will split tho blocks into fragments, and this must be provided against by keep ing tbe stone dry; but Prof. Tetmajer and his assistants report that they have never known a stone to burst with frost after it was built into wall. American Architect The rirst Hawing Maohlna. Ellas Howe, tbe inventor of the sew ing machine, was born In Spencer, Mass., July 9, 1819. His father was a farmer and miller, and Ellas, remained at home, assisting him, till 1835, when he went to Low-ell and found employment in t factory, afterward working in a machine shop at Boston. There he developed bis idea of tbe sowing machine. His first machine, was completed in May, 1845, and he secured his patent Septem ber 10, 1840. Ho made four machines, but received so ilttle encouragement for them that he went to England, where be struggled with ooverty for two years, lie then returned to America, to find that others hod appropriated his idea. For more than fivo years ho was con stantly engaged in lawsuits, but finally secured his right to priority of inven tion, and other manufacturers of sewing machines paid him a royalty on their patent lie now amassed a large for tune, estimated Si.OOO.ooo from the sale of his machines. He died in Brook lyn, New York, October 8, 187.- swindled Br a Colored B,iy. "wnai otner reiorra would you sti gent in tho jury systom?" "There is one very radical reform in! cbango that I think should be made. 1 would require a constitutional uncoi ment to bring it about, but to my mii it ought to be done, I would hare tti number of jurors in civil cases reduced from twelve to six. There is no reuos whatever why six good men can not it turn ss true a verdict as twelve, mi then it would bo much easier to selen the smaller body. In criminal cssesiht same is true, but in those esses the lum ber may be arranged by consent of th parties interested. It would, as I at be necessary to change the Constitution in order to bring about this reform ii the jury system, but in my opinion would be worthy of trial. "This is a subject worthy of carelu'. study, continued Judge Davis. o,ne who has business In our courts uoi can fail to see the necessity for reforms and radical reforms, too, in the whole system of obtaining jurymen. There is an absurd prejudice in some quarter! against changing this institution, but this ought to be swept away. The sys tem, as it is, is wholly unsattsfactorj Under It the most competent to set jurors seldom do so, and under it m who aro in sense incompetent, trt continually serving. This ought to all be changed, and if the public will but Interest itsolt In the matter through In representatives, reforms would soon fol low. " N. Y. Cor. Chicago Newt, fcxpens of th Vatican.
