In Indiana Is one hundred and elghty.flrn milei from the actual pohjl in the sky ahere the meteor -irai rent in nleees, yet aboul the neighborhood of Bloom- ingtou not only was the sound of a frightful explosion heard, but the shock of the concussion was actual I felt to such a degiiH! that some d those who experie ,1 it thought an earthquake BtUat have hap)ened. The tremeodOttl volume of sound that must have been emitted is forcibly presented to us when we consider the In terra) of time that elapsed between the moment when the inhabitant-, nl BlOOtnlnfton taw the gorgeous pro cession of tire-bulls streaming over the heavens, and the moment when the appalling crash burst on their cars. r.vory one is familiar with the fact that the flash of the gun is seen ere the report i heard, and the the greater the distance of the gnu the longer is the interval by which the light and the noise are separated. Sound lakes live seconds to travel a mile; light travels to quickly that the time necessary to t rater it mile, or a hundred miles, or a thousand miles, is utterly inappreciable by ordinary measurement Th" superb spectacle had been seen at Bloomington. It had excited the uimost astonishment; doubtless it had been discussed and notes had been compared by those whose good fortune had permitted them to see it. Bui the Immediate excitement wasorer, friends had parted for the night: some of them had entered their houses: others had renewed their walk homeward, and had traveled nearly a mile on their journey) vehicles had driven a oouple of miles; trains had run half-a-do.eli miles: columns of newspapers had been read. Many who had seen tin- meteor had already forgotten it, when their ears were deafened by the arrival of the awful explosion. Nor need we feel much astonished at stupendous phenomena, both of light and of sound, which accumpnn;, the advent of a sple'idid and detonat ing lire-ball. I must hero give a few figures whteh will show how great s the store of energy possessed by a me teor in virtue of the amazing velocity with which it is animated. I shall sup pose that the material element of the meteor consists of a mass of stone or of some inure or less melalic material which weighs one Kuiid. We shall examine the olreumstat i under which we must endeavor by mechanic al agents to project this small body with the meteoric speed of. lot us say, twenty-live miles a second. Our ut most attempts with a cannon could hardly produde a spied of one-hun-dreth part of the required amount, and even for this a charge of gunpowder, certainly not less than a quarter of u pound, would be consumed. If a can non of Small Ug strong! hand of ideal ef ficiency could be conceived, lu which all the energy of the exploding powder should usefully concentrated upon communicating velocity to tho pro jectile, we should find that to doub.'a the sKVd the charge must be quad rupled. To treble the speed wn should have to increase the charge ninefold, lf the sh-ed were to be increased ten times, we must put one hundred times as much powder into the cannon. Finally, if wo could procure a pie. .if ordnance strong enough and gunpow der rapid enough to impart meteoric velocity lo the missile, a charge would be necessary which Is ten thousand limes as great as tho quarter of a pound that is siifllclcnt under the eon ditioim of ordinary artillery. This argument shows us that the energv of au entire ton weight of gunpowder would be required to Impart ton stone otie pound in weight the liveliness of an ordinary lire-bail. Whatever may have been the origi nal source whence the meteor enquired 1U energy (and this is a pointon which I do not at present make any remark), that energy will be retained so long as 'be meteor retains its velocity. Kven if the meteor moved through empty space for a million years, it would still be able to restore. If its motion were arrested, the precise quantity of en ergv which it had originally received. Hence, when the supreme moment has urrived. the meteor expands in the throes of its dissolution all the energy it contains, livery thing that the Mi rgy liberated by the explosion of a ton Of gnepOWder IM do, that meteor weighing only a p""1 hi mxmpeteil t" accomplish, "if the weight of the missle were greater than one puuinl. the velocity remaining the same ti e available energy would be incro-ed La the same proortion. Fur example, if the meteor weighed ten ou.ids. one hundred pounds, or one thousand pounds, it would discharge as much energv as could be swafceaed by the detonation of ten tons, of one hundred tons or of one thousand of guu-pow-der NVeil we wonder, then, that gor geous lights and that majestic thun ders have occasionally Hcompani.-d the annihilation of large meteor-. -Mr B.
