Some farmers assert that they are very de ttrnctive to gruiu aud gardeus and are be coming a nuisance. Others say that they do Ml food than bam by eating worms and insects that iujure crops. It is very certain that they are a very prolific bird aud are in ereasing rapidly although lnrge numbers of them are killed, despite the law. Th y are very handsome and savory gMN bird, and in moderate numbers afl a valuable acqui sition to the gnrue of the country. But as they iucrease very nrla more rapidly than wy other bird in the atate and are very numerous iu the Willamette valley, we do not see why they should be protected any pore thtu any other game bird, that is, dur ing the close season . Titus were returning from Kitson's Springs Thursday of last week one of the horses became unmanageable, and at a poiut bonl 33 miles above here on the Middle Fork, upset the wagon which rolled down 4tKrade into the edge of the river. Mrs. Allan was bruised some but received no ser- injury. Mr. Titus had his collar bom broken, a gash cut on his head, and was ouVraiM) bruised.
