Southward from Corvallis a very fer tile region stietches, covered with limly cultivated farm, und in one of the In st grain producing sections in the slate. The pro posed extension will lap this splendid portion of the Willamette valley. Within a f,,w years it is very probable that trains will le running regularly between Cnrvallia and Junction, and that branch will become part of the great system now owned nud operated by that corporation in Oregon. The total cost of constructing the branch would not be heavy. School Fund Apportionment. The school fund apportionment for ls.88, just madu by the school laud board through State Treasurer Webb, disburse to every person of school age in Oregon the sum of $1.25, the largest amount per capita ever de voted to thin purpose. The total enuuiera tion of persons of school nge in Oregon is 81,074, and the gross amount of the appor tionment i ti- 1H8.217. 50, the total census of children in 1 KfsG was 8 1 , S5 1, nnd the amount disbursed was UO cents per cupita, aggrtgat ius 5-7-t.155.U0. In 18S7 the census was 87, 217, and the apportionment had increased lo ft each. The enumeration of school popu lation has decreased in 1H88 for the reason that the laft legislature parsed a law which require school clerks to certify on oath a to their census of children in their districts. Heretofore the clerks' leturus have been carelessly made, each making it his object to obtain a large an amount of state school money as possible. The money will be sent out to the various counties this week. Lane has 4,3-l'J nersous of school aye, and w ill re ceive $'1,4:10.25. The Repairs Will Now be Made. Judge Deady Mouday modified bis order of Juue 15th, in the case of ('. X. Scott, re ceiver of the narrow gnugo roads, vs, the Oregon Railway Jfc Navigation Co., allowing Mr. Scott to borrow money to repair the road and pay oil' indebtedness. It has been found impracticable to make the loan re quired ami the modified order allows persons having claims against the narrow gunge amounting to $1,1100 or more to take 'receiv er's certificate for iheir claims. Scv. ral persons may assign their claims to make up the 1,1101) when a certificate will be issued to the assignee. These certificates are the same as a mortgage on the roads and bears iuterest at '.) per cent, and if the interest is not paid the iuterot coupon also draws interest from the time it is due. Several persons are ready 1 1 lay ties, repair bridges, trestles, etc., and take certificates in pay ment. This scheme will probably prove sat isfactory to those who hold claims against the roads on which they have heretofore not been able to realizo any thing. fifv Transfers.
