Landreth'8 Confession.
Statesman, June 8th.
Laiidreth, the Polk county murderer,
out wira another confession, xesterdny he
isut word to a member of the Statesman
reportorial stuff that he wanted to see him, .
aud when the reporter called on him at the
jail he handed him a sheet of legal oap upon
the (our pages oi wuicu was written a tuira
stateineut of the crime. It is more lucid
in statement than the former two, and is
probably an exact account or the cirenm-
ataures of the murder and the causes which .
led to it.
The confession starts out with another
strong ileniul of any criminal relations be
tween Landreth aud hisitep-daughter. Then
he repents (be statement about the girl and
her uucle trying to break him down by using
letters be had written, in conseoueace oi
which "all who knew me looked on me with
scornful gaze." His mind was so dis
tressed that be could think of nothing but
the ruin of himself and family. He felt
worse, he says, than he does to day, and he
has had his sentence a week. lie says
further:
"I did not thiuk of killing the girl, but I
thought many times of taking my owu life.
One time I cleared the hay from a joist in
the barn, and thought there I would finish
my distressed life, but wheu I went to the
house after the rope to do it with, I could
not take the rope in band. My tongue or
pen cannot describe the distress of my
heart."
Now, friends," he writes iu another
place, "it matters not to me what disgrace
you put on me. I aui willing to plead guilty
to all the charges that you wish to put
against nie. I know that I will soon have
auother trial, aud that is in the courts of
heaveu. God is the judge. He hnth the
evidence written himself.
He addB further on: "The last words I
ever spoke in my house tb.tt morning, I said
to my wife, 'the river is high this uiorning.'
Then I weut to the kitchen to make a fire.
When I got iu there a thought came over
me to kill the girl. When Ih it cnuie over
me, it set me so wild and crszy and excited, I
rushed for the bed. There came a glare
over uiy eyes till I oonld hardly see her, but
she did uot speak to uie, nor did I speak to
her. All I could bear was the screams of
the children. I was so excited it is a wou-
der that I did uot hit some of the children.
I was backing all around on the bed with
the knite. I couldn't see jnHt where she
was. The first thing I knew my wife came
and crowded between me and the bed. I
don't know if 1 had hold of her or not.
There was not a drop of blood on my
clothes."
Landreth theu continues with the Btory
of his llight from the house to the slough,
where he says lie tried to ooiumit suiciuo,
but was preveutedby the boy; his escape
serosa the bridge and Lis capture. "When
I done that deed if I could have thought
what would become of me, I surely would
not doue it for all the money iu the world."
He then says he never claimed to be crazy,
aud oloses bv asking nil who have been
wtouged to forgive him. Lmdreth obtained
from the reporter a promise to publish this
eontesHlou and men reurin ') ins eeii. . ,
Landreth was uiucli diHtuibed about Ins
date of execution. He apparently labors
under the impression that he won t be told
when ho Is to bo hung, but will some day
be led without warning from bit cell and
itruug up.

Washington Letter.
I saw Gen. Joe Johnston on the avenue
yesterday. He is beginning to look old.
It is time, for he was born iu 1N0S. He goes
to his office regularly snd works steadily,""
but ennnot carry quite the load of responsi
bility a yonuger man would take on. uen.
Johnston's grandfather was bom in Scot
land 103 years before bis owu blrtb. In
1726 the grandfather came to America to let-
tie in Virginia. Johnston s father was born
when bis first settler was (jj, and jonnsion
when his father was 00. So Joe Johnston's
father served in the revolution, running
sway to enlist iu Light Horse Harry Lee's
legion at tneageol l(, auu received ius
thanks of the General before the whole army
for bis bravery at the assault on Fort Wat
sou. In 182'J Joe Johnston and Robert E.
Lee graduated together from West Point.
Old Joe has fought in four wars- He went
sgainst Blaok Hawk, fought Osceola, was in
the Mexican war and the rebellion. He
bears ten scars of serious wounds, and yet .
he is as spry as a boy. Gen. Johnston has
no children, and with him will end a line of
remarkable men.

rode out to the races and came back without
ahorse or a blanket to oovor their erect
forms.
. Again the parrot cry of the Old Whig relio
is beard, to the effect that the internal tax is
the "only war tax." It is pretty much the
ouly war tax ibat has been abolished and re
duced. Wbereas the system of internal tax
ation covered about everything valuable in
night in 1806, and yielded faiiO.OOU.lKJO of
revenue, it is now confined to spirits and to
bacco, and yielded Inst year but $118,000,
000 The tariff, on the other baud, pro
duced last year $217,000,000, against 179,
000,000 iu 18G6-an actual increase of t.
000,000. The average duty iu 181)6 was
48.35 the maximum of war taxation and
last year was 47.18. The war taxes lo U.
next reduced should be those on the food,
fuel, clothing and shelter of the people.
Every one cau abolish the whisky tax for
himself.
The rauk of General of the Army has been
revived bv Concresa. and Gen. Phil. Sheri

nominated by the President and conflimed
by the Senate.
