HUFFMAN School Hupcrintendeut, A. W. PATTEK80N Surveyor, L. F. AVOOLEY Coroner, A. W. PRATHER Pour Explanation. In its eagerness to defend Joel Wart the Uegisti-r is not particular aa to Ibo truth Her ia what it aaid in regard to Ware filing assessor' blanks in ita issu of May 12: "The Brut filing was dons under the ad ministration uf Judge Fitch and Commiss ioner McMithon and Bpores." Agniirhist Wednesday; There ia no book in the county nor never was in which the desorintion of the aesensed real estate ia placed by the assessor or any othr officer. The asssor's blanks up to HH'i did not contain such description of the realty aa would enable the sheriff to col loot the taxes and to remedy auch defects Jude Fitch directed that in the future aucb bedoue and-tlieu the paper' filed ua waa dune and ba been ever since, and niUHt be ountiuued in the future or the aaaetaor re- auired to make out aucb an asssnor s duplicate aa will ahow the deHcriptiou of the realty, from and by wbich the sheriff can aell suoh realty in cum of dufuiilt in .nuni and thia would cost fur more than the filing oi me maun. Nut exactly a lucid statement. Mr. Mo Muhun states emphatically that no blanks were filed and paid for by the county during nis term ot olllce. And now that they knuw that the commissioners are alive and ready to defend tbeuiaelvee against auch state ments, they aeek to faaten the blame upon Judge Fitch, a man who has passd to hi grave. We said hist week and have abso iuie jirooi, mat no blanks were filed nor bills allowed for the same uutil several months after Judge Fitch waa dead and bur ied. It ia sorrowful exhibition of human selfishness that in order to defend wrong do ing a Journal will una its oolumua'to publish statement which it must kuow are false; will go to the grave ami caliuuuiate and slander a inuu who aleeps adjoining our oily in the sil. nt grave. The last atatemeut is as false and mislead ing as the first. The assessors for years paat gave descriptions of property as near ai pc-a-sible fur the limited time allowed fur assess ment. Mr. Wars in making the rolls never nas copied any description of property on the assessment rolls, so tnat no sheriff in Line oould sell real property for taxes. Mr. Wars kuows, Mr. ilonu knows, and everv intelligent tuau who has knowledge of the suliject knows that the sheriff dues nut fur a moment couault the assessment blauks when he sells property for taxes. To ahow the insincerity and the utter falsity of the state ment above made by th Register, we pul lish the law on the oollectiun of doliuqueut taxes; Hill code, laws of Oregon, page UuO, sto.28U: It shall be the duty of the county clerk of eauu vuuuiy auer tue return 01 ueliuquent taxes as made by the aherit) thereof ou the ttrat Mouday of April of eaoh year, wilhiu teu slays thereafter, to make from aaid delin quent lax roll a true aud ooireot list of the Sales relumed aa unpaid, aud correct de scription ot the laud or town luta if the same can be made, aud to whom such taxes are charged, and deliver the name to the sheriff of th couuty with a warrant attached there to, ooutiuiMiding aucb aheriff to levy uKu tang.RKiSHudohaU.il ot such Uiliuqueut tax payer, and if uoue be fouud then upon th real proprly as set forth iu said deliii qweut tax iiu. After a careful reading of the law above quoted w find nothing aaid about selling real estate fiout assessment blauks. Tbv faots are as staled by the Guahu. We are not parliaau enough to make auy atatemeat that is not th aituj 1 truib. We are not fanning a nwappi r in that way. An Easy Sheriff. The Journal says (bat Sloan is a good, easy aheriff, and does nut distress men be cause of their deliuquc-it tuxes. This is not a Very convincing argument, when the fact is knuwn that the county it paying interest on a laree sum of money while thousands of dollars of delinquent laics are outstanding. The county is entitled to the money due her. and it is the duty of the sheriff to collect it. The sheriff of Multuomah county wiili a tax roll of 'U1,8S3 returned ou the first of April a less dcliinient tax list than Johu ' Kloan with roll of $70,000. Mr. E ikin failed to go to Mohawk, the first place: ou the cnuvass, Wednetday, but attended at Springfield oo the next dy. Ua devoted his time iu attempting t prove that there was notbinu in the national banking ay stem fur bank but the business prr-siitf it gave. He is in favor of national b:iiik On interest he is in favor of allowing every man to make whatever contract be pleases for the use of money. This means the re. peal of the nury law. Many will remember tnat a few years ago when the bill was passed reduoing Ihe rate of interest from 12 nnd 10 per cent, to 10 and 8, that money luaners claimed that it would make no difference, that bonuses would be paid for money that would compensate for the loss of interest. This view bus proved fallacious. Money is luaued almost exclusively at the legal rate. If the rut of iutxrest was reduced tu 8 and 6 per cent, it would be better for Ihe country. The qnealiou for the people to d. Icrinino is who cnu be trusted to support mub a mean nre, 8. B. Eakin or E. P. Coleman. Congressman Kerr, of Iowa, Republican, mad a spnaeb a few duys ago on the tariff question, in which he said: "He approved a reduction of the revenue bv the abolition of the internal revenue lax The time had coiub, he thought, in the his tory of tho AmericHfi uov.-rmiiunt ,1. .... . - o ....... .... im- tlou to declare that henceforth it would take no snare in the profits of the sale of alco holic liquor."
