The tirst day of the Fair was ushered in bv a beautiful, clear skv. In the pavilion i ail were intent 011 making the best display of j articles possible. Hie secretary und usMst ants were crowded to their utmost in making entries, lty the time of opening in the ev ening the laigu and well lighted pavilion was tilled with ariicl.s on exhibit, at ranged iu a manner that did credit to tho superinten dents of ditl'ereut divisions. The attendance was good, nud all seemed pi cm fed. The I'iremau's Hand gave some excelent selec tions. At the race track all the stable mid sheds were tilled to overflowing with horsis, cattle, sheep and swine. The poultry department was fairly well represented. THK HACK T,,k place promptly at 3 p m. It was a half mile dash, free for all. Purse, 1st, 10; 2d, $20. The entrh'S were: "lielinda." by Withrow; "Garfield" by lloynton; "Sai lor Roy" by Field. The bettiug was in fa vor of "Gartlebl." Tho race was . won bv "lielinda," "Gartleld second. Time, .12! i seconds. Tiiunsiixv, Skit. 22i. The second day opened with the best of weather. Tho pavilion wns in better order, but still the exhibits poured iu until 2 p. in. Iu the afternoon aud evening the judges were quite busy awarding premiums. In the evening a large crowd tilled the pavilion ad miring the various article on exhibition, and enjoying the tine music rendered by the band. Mr Geo Uelshuw has the best exhibit iu the pavilion. He has 130 varieties of wheat in the sheaf and iu sacks. His exhibit of wheat is one that cannot be beaten on the earth, and is more complete than the one he took tho blue ribbous with at Salem last week. Mr llclsbaw has done more effective advertising for Oregon than any doen men withiu her bound. The glass blower is on hand uud gives a nice little show at a mod erate cost. The fruit department i sadly neglected but what there is, is good. I ho vegetable liue is well represented. The la dies show lUnnv varieties of the choicest llowcrs. The fancy work department is well represented and cuunot b beaten anywhere. Oregon maliuluettires are somewnai scarce, but slill they till iiuitca niche in the huge hall. Canned fruit and jellies are well repn seated. Hoth our photographers make a good show ing. Whale ,v. Giilllller of halem miiKe a spledid exhibit of pianos and organs.
