A tourist just from the Sandwich islands
says, the garden island of the group, Kuuaii,
is owned by tierinans. It is l.'iiHiO square
miles in cMeut and about TlHIU population,
the most of whom are Chinese nnd Kanaka
laborers. The island of Hawaii is about 4IHH)
siiiare miles ami is controlled by American,
English ami German merchants, whoso
prae. fill and bloodless revolution has been
much exaggerated. There urn filKJO China

A real estate ngent, who recently visited
boomlano in California, returns of the opinion
that the Southern Pacilic railroad will do us
much for Oi gon as it has done for California,
which is a gn at deal. Ho thinks that at
least seventy thousand mople aro now
headed for Oregon, and will visit this state
in the next year or two. There is no doubt
that times will liven up when connection by
rail with California is completed. Real es
tate transfers will hug. ly increase, mid nil
kinds of business w ill be brisker. The pop
ulation that the in ib na.l will induce to come
here will biing about these things. This is
what we wo want. We want belter times
ami more prospi rily generally, but no boom,
such us the term implies, And it is the
opinion of the writer that we will bo far
enough away from tho storm center
of the real "boom" to gi t nil its belli Qeial

values and visionary prosperity. State.

The lirooklyn G. A. It. to the number of

to Pension Commissioner lllack. A speech
was mado by Gen. Dun. Sickles, in which be
said:
You, as Grnnd Army men, should (eel

calls to my mind the fear I hud when (hero

years ngo this was brought about, and mil

that sympathy or cordiality which bad been
previously done. I have been thoroughly
convinced that whatever party liny be in'
power the claims of tin veteran will always
lie recognized. It is gratifying to know that
the party in power to-day has just as much
sympathy with the veteran as its predecessor.
