A saloou at Florence has been talked about but we.buve heard nothing of re monstrauce aud dou't like to offend any one by saying one ought to be circulated, but it seems sometime as if we might attain to a high degree of eulightuitmt without the pub lic sale of liquors iu our midst. Should any of the students of the Sbite University visit us Hub Mummer and then wish to describe tidewater people aad conn try in the columns of the Oregonian, we advise them to confine themselves to the truth and follow iu the footsteps of their il lustrious predecessor of last year. A large circle of friends sympathize with her relatives iu their sad bereavement. Sououum Sal. A Card. Ed. Goaiiti. In the case of the Stato of Oregon vs Ellis Eastwood a motion was filed to set asido the indictment against him on the ground that two of the names of the grand jurors presenting said indictment, to wit: Jasper Wilkiua audC.M. Hrattain, were not taken from the last proceeding assessment roll for Lane county in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 021, Title 2, Chapter 12, Civil codo. Upon my attention being called to the matter I And that the name of Jasper Wilkins appear in conjunction with his father's and brother's, and that the name of C. M. Krattain as returned by the Sheriff should have been C. E. Rratlain. This mo tion was not based on the ground that those gentlemen were uot taxpayers, for it is well known that both are leading farmers and are possessed of considerable property on which they pay taxes, but as alsjve stated, the ground of its motion was that their name did not appear on the roll ai required by said section. I make this staU-ment that nil may know that there was no intention to cast any reflection on either of these gentlemen and to correct any erroneous impression that may tiui Iwun fi.rmeit by Demon present at the time the qnestion wa presented to the court.
