San Francisco Eirsmlner. Stato Senator Routier, who has been a lifu long llepuMican, come out mjuarely ngiiinst li is former associates and in favor of tho entiro Dumocratic ticket, inmiediatoly after the adjourn ment of thn Sun -"Frrtncinco convention. Ho given his reasons in a letter which oppeared in tli Covrrier de San l Yancisco last Saturday, and of which the' following is a translation: ; Should naturalized citizens yotn for Repuhlican candidatos at tho coining election? . . To that question I answer a decided No! For tho following 'reason: As long A we were satisfied that lio differ, ence. was made U'tweea naturalized e:li.i:iis and citizens horn in the United States, the vital question of our rights, of our future, of our property and in fluence was not dependent cn politics, and we lM-lived, that tho nefarious doctrine of Know Nothingisui wan des titled never more to figure at tha polit . ical horizon of California. Unfortu nately such is net the case, Last Fourth of 'July, tho ahniversary of that American independence toward the achievement of which our ances tors did not work thn least, we wit nessed the choosing as orator of (he day of a 'man tho most hostile In'Cali fornia. not only to tho naturalized de ment, but even to the descendants of naturalized citizens, so long as their naino' or religion-iii(liea:ed their origin. Faithful to hin mission, that hater of Catholics and foreigners delivered an eloquent speech, no doubt, whn taken from the American party standpoint, but which was nothing elso but an odious tirade against all naturalized foreigners audacious enough to consider themselves the equals of Americans born. 'Somo may nay that the very largo nudiencfl on that occasion, by its very attitude; taught the orator a lea son. Far from that, those in attend-' ance were there by invitation and ho received 'rounds, of npplaiiKfl and was almost carried off in triumph. ' 1 It may lie wiid also that the next day the newspapers of all complexions protetted against tho utter'siuea of the orator. Not at all; tho Democratic journal alone raised tho cry of "lihanie;" the Republican organs published noth ing except praise for the speaker, One paper, I lielieve, as a matter of form, stated something that might possibly be construed into a slight blame, Intoxicated by his success, the pro prietor and editor of the Argonaut continued his mercilesH war against all parties naturalized or Catholics. His writings were reprinted in several Rev publican journals, and lie workrd to such succet.H that at t lie close of the ( Republican convention at Los Angeles the supporters of the party publicly boasted during tho progress of a ratifi cation , orgy, of being successful for oiiee, In nominaurig a ptirn American ticket: No Germans, no irish, no Ital ians, especially no Jews; not a -dingle foreigner. - l ater, having discovered that one of the candidates nominated at the con vention was a catholic, and (hatanolh er, notwithstanding his American name was an Englishman wholiad had tho double - audacity to come to this country when 7 vertrs of agand more over to present himself as an Ameri cm, the Grand Priest of Americanism immediately failed a meeting of his disciples, who wiped out the two names unworthy of a Republican ticket replacing them by those of pure-blood' ed Know-Nothings. I may, perhaps, be asked why I, a Republican for years, who has always ond everywhere voted for liberty, for the emancipation of the blacks, why do I throw down tny sword? To that I must answer that, as a Re publican, I a disarmed long ago. Lilnrty's cause was abandoned by the Republicans on the day when Tresi dent Hayes abandoned Ndnh Carolina and Louisiana to the South for its Presidential vote. Long enough has the emancipation of the blacks leen voted for; it is time to-day that we should place, ouraelves'j in opposition to the slavery rf whit'-a What olse would be a republic whera a nnn would have, no civil rights? ' ' The Republican candidato for Gor vemor has stated that it is useless to recall tho memory of Lincoln and the bravery of Grant for the purpoio of winning this fight, that something new is required. As far as I am concerned, I can only recognizees the head of tho Republican party those men who have retained tho worship of tha martyr President and also that of the grand old soldier who naved his country from ruin. . Let tho pygmies who have for gotten those iiiiuioital men, or who would essay to shorten the recollection of their deeds to their own night, he removed to make place for men. , 1 1 On the labor question the Democrat ic party is 'unanimous in condemning tho employment of Chineso in anj manner. It is not in a Democratro organ that one could find the follow, ing: "Between the emigrant who arrivo from Kurope and those who como from China ho choice can be made." Put that doctrine wan dis cussed at length in the Republican papers. As to tho tariff Question, it has nothing to do with politics, Thn pro ducer ants protection and the non pro Jui or free trade, that has nothing to do with whether a man is a Repub lican or a Democrat. " p A point that we (should consider it that if tho Republican press are' not treating the "foreign elemont very harshly' at present it iu because we are ' on the eve of an election. Let us open the papers published July 6th, 0th and 7th last, and in them wo. will read who are tho friends of naturalized citizens.'. It is far from my intention to Jnsin' uate that as a candidate for office, foreigner should bo 'preferred to 'an American-born, hut I insist that even tho disrussiyi as to whether or not ft naturalized citizen should have "the same rights as an Amorican-bdrn is an insult to justice and a breach of sworn faith. , ' " .' Furthermore foreigners have made the America of this day. The true American exists no longer; the Indiafo in dying oris dead. TliO English, French, 'Spanish, Italians, Tor'tugesA, German and Swiss have mado America what America is.' ' . Tho foreign ' element ' plan'.ed tho vines that sdorti our hills, the hops that grow in our fields ''and the rreea that crow in our orchards. We have worked faithfully for odr adopted homo, Why not then 'render tTa the credit which is due? To lget ' that' we must bo united arid strong aiid vote for our tried friend the Democratic party.- For thirty years 1 ' thought that w were looked upon by the Republicans as their equals, as the sons of the same father even if we had been nursed by a common mother, and I hoped for nothing more than to rock myself with the idea that I had found a new home and country; the awakening was rough indeed. The stern reality is there however, and we must not show any weakness. Let us sink our (ships and pass from our enemies, the Republi cans, to our friends in the Democrat io ranks. Josktii RorjTiRR. ' llanJjonint Democrat. For onee all Democrats "will join with unreserved heartinens in a toast proposed by one of the primest of Massachusetts Mugwumps, Dr. William Everett, son of Ed w aril -Everett At the dinner of the 1'r.y State club, to ratify tho new Democratic State ticket, Dr. Everett said: Two years ago it fell to me to pro poso the her-lth of the President. I call on you to drink to the health and ijive three cheers for the handsomest Democrat in the country, Mrs. Grover Cleveland." " ' And, as we are informed by the Bos ton Evening Transcript, "the assem blage rose and gave three rousing cheers for the mistress of the White House" a ceremony which we doubt not every man who was not at the Bay1 State dinner, "when he hears of H, will perform in the secrecy of his own hturt. And the ehers must not be measured out by triplets or limited U the occasion of a ratification dinner either. A perpetual stream of. cheer. i., Mrs. Cleveland' happy fortune. N. Y. Sun.
