The En of Republican riumlcr.
Tim new Democratic campnign linnd
KXk will prove v most dinagrrcaMA
surprise to those Republican organs
which hftve made merry at times over
the words of the late Victt.Prrtidtmt
Hendricks: Ve need to have the
books in the government olGcng opened
for examination." The hooks were
opened, and tho Republicans lonsted
that notlung was- discovered to (how
the existence of fraud or grounds for
suspicion, I ho wide discrepancies in
tho accounts of the treasury under Re
publican aJ minis1 ration, and the 2,527
erasures in the ledgnrs of the offices of
the.regihter and it'cndary, have already
been fully expoited ftnrt commented
upon, and tho Republicans flattered
themselves with the notion that the.
worst wag known. From the figures
and inconteotihlo proofs presented by
the Democratic campaign hind-book, it
appears that "the Republican party, in
its long lenan of power, Imn, thro'jli it
various officers, by defalcation in col
lections and disbursements," stolen over
20,000,OCO of tho people's moni y.
A partial peep into tho books reveal
this astonihing evidence of Republican
plunder, and when the full exposure of
all the delinquencies and defalcations
of Republican ollbe holders is made,
the people can judge of what Republi
can Government really means. 1 In-
work of investigation is necessarily
slow, as it takes considerable time to
get up the accounts of the disbursing
and receiving officers. The tables of
defalcations presented . by the DoniO'
cratio campaign hand-book do not in
clude shortages in the sixth auditor's
department, which has charge of the
expenditures of the postoffice depart
ment, in which Dorsey, Brady and the
Star Route thieves figure. They do
not inoludu the shortages in Urn third
and fourth auditor's pffices, which deal
with the expenditure, of the war and
navy departments, and do not,, there
fore, comprise the fraud of Howgate,
Hodges and thn Robeson and Chandler
gang. (. No evasion, aubterf ugn or hy
pocrisy can avail the Republican party
against this terrible array of fijUren, It
stands liefore the people, convicted of
wholesale plunder. Truly the openinu
of the books Inis proved more than was
even antieiuateil.
Central llruly'i Douk.
Ono of those government robbers of
Star route notoriety is writing a book,
and that man is General Iira?j.t If he
tells all he knows about some men nnd
things, rich and interesting dinclonures
will be made. The uiKpatchns say that
the Genera proposes t( place several
alleged statesmen in public pillory, and
will give the iniikle history of the Hon
da election, the returns of 1370 and the
Star routo trials and investigations;
and that he will embellish tho book
with (to limit autograph letters and
memoranda which will apeak for them
selves. Brady evidently wants to get
even with somebody,.
It is significant that tho most largely
circulated paper in .Pennsylvania, the
Philadelphia Record, is a, Very earnest
opponent of the. high protective tariff.
Ths Record's circulation p,rows, too,
having increased, within ft few months
from 105.000 daily to 113,501). The
politicians would seem to have some
thing to learn from the popularity of
Miit i high tarilf papers thn coustry over.
The fact that a good nmny prominent
Knights of Labor nre asking the work
ingnimt to tell, if they can, what ;fiod
the high tiritT has dorm them, should
also give the polit icians a "pointer'
Do 4hey imagine the Knights ore under

Lake of the Woodi nnd loont I'll
The southernmost of Oregon's sno
p-aks is Moulit Pitt, the orowning
feature of the Cascade rang near it
terminus at the Klamath lakes. It
was christened in honor of England's
great statesman of that name, and;, by
its title sorvoa, in common with many
other localities and objects- as a per
petual reminder of (he early explora
tion and occupation of the Upper Pa-
citio coast by thu enterprising, subjects
of Great Britain, It is often,, though
less commonly, called Mount "Mc
Laughlin," in honor of tho sturdy
Scotch doctor who managed the affairs
of tho Hudson Bay Company in this
region for so many years, and who is
such a prominent and honorable char,
acter in the early annals of .Oregon..
The latter name is more appropriate,
and should supercede the former. - Tho
mountain as neen from thn shore of the
Lake of the Woods, one of those crys
tal geirisuo numerous in . the- Cascades,
the mountain's snowy sides sharply re
flected by thi mirrored surface of the
water, , ,Tlm , lake lies at a distancs
from civilization, but he who seeks it
will find, beautiful scenery, refroahin
mountain air and water, game in
abundance, and full of sport with' the
beautiful trout with which it abound -
The Albany Herald of the 18th says:
Track laying on the Oregon Pacific, be
tween Corvallis and the Willamette
river at this city, is now praoiically
completed, and the trains will bo run-'
ning to tho Albany bridge in a very
short timo. A large number of Chin
ese laborers were taken from this city!
yesterday to lay., sido tracks and
switches on tho main line just conn.
pleted, Work will bo commencod this-
morning on laying a switch to tlia
gravel bar above this city, to procure,
the grave for ballasting the road. This
work will occupy about a week. A
switch is also to be built to a ware-.
houso botween Albany , and Corvallis,
in the near future. The piers of the
bridge are nearly completed, and the
bridge timbers are at the depot at Cor
vallis, and will bo brought., down tho
river at once to he placed in position..
It is expected to. have the bridge ready
to admit the passage of trains by Oct.!
15th. Wjien the track-is completed
for th)., Qregon. PacifJo trains to cross,
the lridge .over the .Willamette, into
Albany, which will now be within a
fow weeks, tho event . should by all
means be celebrated by driving ft gol
den spike, with appropriate ceremonies.'
This would show enterprise, advertiss
both th road nnd this city, and would
altogether be the proper thing to da

The policy of attacks on the Admin
istration of President Cleveland is in
teresting when considered in. its .regu
lar, rhythmio and periodical aspeot.
Secretary Lamar was at first selected.
Vituperation and villification woro
their fangs down to the gum and thon.
mumbled at him. The Ponsion Bureau,,,
being in his Department, was hold up
in the most inijuicoui lights, but as the
country, was led to Investigate Gun.
Black's methods in that Bureau, they
were indorsed and pence fell upon the
Interior Deportment. Noxt the Navy
Department .was accused of giving
John Roach indigestion and. softening
of the brain, - and a pitying Heaven
was called to look, at him, stretched on
a bed of pain. .But . when Heaven did
look, John Roach was found stretched
itt a hammock, and mighty able to do
his pnrt at a clambake or a bull's-liead
breakfast. No the S.ate Department
is in focus, and if the papers are to be
lu 'ievcd it is doing the American birth
right up in bunches and sel.ing it at
auction to Mexico, Canada and any
outside bidder who will put up a cent
or invest a wink on the auctioneer.
After the shower of rot passes by, the
people will see that this whole adminis
tration is protecting American honor
abroad and promoting clean politics at
home, and tho critics will find that do.
litmation of their own country is not
endorsed by American citizens.
