Harvey Scott, tho editor of tho Ore

age, weighs ISO pou n.ls, stands five
feet eleven inches, and is justly regard
i'd as one of the worst bad men in the
State of Oregon. His strength is r.oto.

his viciousness of disposition when
aroused. Ho is a man w ho seldom

A Hopeless Minority.
Among the Rev. Henry Ward
IVeoher'a many accomplishments not
the least in his ability as a story toller.,
A typical -''knight of the grip sack"
was detained at a small town in west
tern Now York a while ago where a
revival meeting was in progress. Ha
had met a party of convivial friends
during his stay there, and had had
what is popularly known as "a laod
on." Nevertheless he drifted into the
revival meeting and took a seat welt
iip in front It was rather close in tho
church and the air was conductive to
sleep. Tho drummer yielded to tho
drowsy god, and after nodding little
sank into a profound slumber and slept
through the minister's rather long and
dry discourse. Tho audience sang ft
hymn and the drummer slept ou. Then
tho Evangelist began his address, and
wound up his fervid appeal with this
reques :
"Will all of you who want to go to
heaven please rise."
Kveryono iti the church' except the
sleepy druu.mer arose. When the
Evangelist asked them to ho seated one
of the brothers iii tlio same pew as the
sleeping drummer accidentally bryfihed
against him as ho sat down. The drum
mer rubbed hiii eyec, and partially
awake heard tho tast portion of tho
Evangelist's reqaest, which was:
"Now I want all of you who want to
go to he: to stand up,"
The drummer struggled a little,
leaned forward unsteadily, and rose
from his seal in a dazed sort of way.
ii
A suppressed laugh ho heard fro.ti
some of the younger people, and he
noticed an expression of horror on the
fanes of soinn oi (lie older ones!
Steadying himself affa
a i list the ran ho,
looked at the Evangelist an instant and
ml
then said: ,i .

Tlio works of tho immense clock
which has been put up in tho llWd of
Trade building m Chicago aro pro
nounced a most perfect reproduction of
those of the great Westminister Palace
clock in London, but with some addi
tions and improvements adapted to its
commercial purpose. It is constructed
of iron, bronzo and Htrof,' and weighs
ten tons without the hell, the latter
adding some 4,500 pounds more. Tho
pendulum alono weighs 750 pounds. In,
its arrangement thn works are divided
into a time train, a hand train and a
striking train, these several trains com
prising separate- machines, resting side
by side ou separate frames. Each of
ilia trains is operated by a separate
weight, and the three weights together
reach some 3,500 pounds. The ham
mer that strikes tho bell weighs 80
pounds, the clock work is belo tho
the dials, which are ten feet ten inches
in diameter, and the hell above them,
or 250 feet above the ground. The
pendulum swings one way in to seconds.
The experience of the last two Re
publican legislatures in Oregon should
admonish tho taxpayers to vote for
men of ability and experience for tho
legislature, says the World. The jiec
pie's money has been squandered and
laws have been passed which' haya
been, ono by one, set aside by the Su
preme Court of the State. The extra
session, which cost tho people m un
lawful appropriations and otherwise,
not less than 100,f 00, is directly
chargeablo to Republican legislation
and folly.
We havo heard much, yw very
much, about Dmnocratio extravagance
in this State under former administra
tions, but the last session of the legisla
ture will show a degree of recklessness
never before witnessed in Oregon. Tho
general and 8ecial appropriations
made by that legislature nearly double .
those of any Democratio legislature in
Oregon, and to this we add lhefx
pense of the special session and its ap
propriationa. We shall present tho
figures liefore long, which will cause the
peopfe to pray for deliverance from
another Republican legislature in Ore-,
gon, rays the World.
