following to say about former citizens
of Lann county:
Mr. II. II. Gilfry paid Uregon a
long visit the past Summer, and there
fore was (-cabled to personally rendor
an accunt if himself to his numerous
friends. He still holds the responsible
position' of Legislative Clerk of the

tyve position, a pleasant home, a loving

Mr, Gilfry's case. His avoirdupois is

Mrs. Gilfry are always "at home" to

Mr. J. L. Wortrnan, or "Jake," as I,
in common with his other schoolmates,
used to call him, can he found at the
Army Medical Museum, th old FordV
theatre where President Lincoln met
his fatal shot. Mr. Wortrnan is anato
mist of the surgeon general's office,
United States army. As tho va'ue
and scope of the army medical museum
appear to lie not generally known, I
have it in my mind soon to devote a
letter to this subject, at which time I
may refer more specifically to Mr.
Wortnin's work. Jake is an enthusi
astic scientist, and has already reached
an enviable position. He has lately
been elected to a memWship in the
Washington Philosophical Society, his
membetship address lining on the sub
ject, "Philosophical Significance of the
Milk Dentition." In a book now in
course of publication he has a lengthy
paper en "Comparative 'Anatomy of
the TVctli. Another distinction ac
copied hill's worthy of record, that he

during the Spring lecture dour'so, He
has not yet decided on a suhject, but
it will doubtless be "The Development
of the Horse," a subject that will brin

L. II. Wheeler1, a young attorney of
Portland, reached Washington a few
days ngo. The time nf his stay is un
determined, he having come partly on
business and partly on pleasure.
The correspondent, also gives Joa
quin Miller a good notice, pnd says he
is accumulating money.

Quite h sensation was created at At
lanta, Ga., the other day by the arrest
of two of the most prominent and
wealthy merchants of that city, and
their subsequent release on a bond of
$1 0,000 each to keep the peace. They
were Green Dodd and Puul Jones.
Since the prohibition election these
two gentlemen have been ofe daggers'
ends, Dodd having been a very conspic
uous prohibition leader, and Jones
prominent on the other side, Dodd
has a notorious Muck mule which bites
everything and evyrhody that gives
hin a chance, The other day this
mule was feeding in front of the store,
being hitched to a dray near the side
wal . Jones was passing at the time,
and the animal mude a dire at hi oh
This incensed Jones, and- he walked
into Dodd's store. ' One, oj Dodd's
clerks saw him comiiigj.and he handed
his employer a pistol. Jones walked
to Dodd and sbid, "If you don't take
that damn mule away I'll cut his
throat." Dodd said that Jones had a
penknife, and threatened to cut his
throat instead of tlw mule's. Do,

levelled his pistol on- Jones, and tol
him if he moved a step further he
would fire. Jones withdrew, being fol
lowed by Dodd, who- still kept him
undercover. Jones went to his store
and soon reappeared with a double-

As there are many Lane county
residents in this locality and subscrib
ers to the Gcard, I will try to tell you
about some of them, thoir welfare and
the present outlook for Eastern Ore
gon in general. Up to this dato the
weather has been that of a bright
spring, with the exception of a layer of
snow which fell on ths eighth and
ninth to a depth of fivo inches. This
snow, the only one this svason, covered
the beautiful hills and prairies for
Sfjven days, when it disappeared, leav
ing all ffrcen-onfo itfore,.' Uroju is -tinpj
and stock is looking well",' and play
ing as if it wore Juno weather.
The fall sown grain is looking well
and fine and indications are very flat
tering for a good crop next year.
This part of Eastern Oregon is pre
eminently going to be a rich farming
country. Last season wheat that was
sown on raw prairie land yielded as
high as forty bushels to the acre, and
three times as much grain was threshed
here last season as the year preceding,
and there is not near so much crain
in the country as a year ago. A great
deal of the wheat raised this last sea
son has been converted into Hour. Our
nearest shipping point is Arlington,
(formerly Alkali) a distance of fifty
two miles from this placo. Wheat is
worth there about fifty three cents per
bushel. At these figures tho reader
car. see that it would not be profitable
to raise wheat and haul it the above
distance and sell it at tho aforesaid
price. Hut as it is now, Arlington is
the place where mos of the peoplo get
their groceries, and by going there they
can haul a load of grain, and out of
the proceeds buy their supplies.
As I said, this will make a good
farming country, provided there was
a railroad or some other means of
transportation to carry the articles
which the farmer can dispose of. Un
trrl-sucW-be the case our country , will
remain undeveloped, and the average
of the fanners, I mean those who de
pend Bolely on farming for a livelihood,
will prove a failure . financially
rathor than a , success. Slock
raising is the sure business for this
country, and the only business that a
man can realize anything from in this
country for a number of years.
The location of the county seat of
our county is much talked of at pres
ent, At the formation of the
county, Arlington was chosen as a
temporary location. Arlington, is at
one end of the county, and while we
admit that it is our shipping point
where we get our Bupplies at present,
it is not a suitable place for the county
seat. There are many aspiring places,
among which I may name Condon,
Lone Rock, Arlington una" Fossil.
Fossil, in my judgment, is the most
suitable location, and is surrounded by
tho largest number of our residentev
There is hope of bxr getting the
prize.
There am many settlers who have
located here from your part of Oregon
which is known here as "Webfoot."
Among the many who came from Lane
county, and who are our neighbors
here I will try to mention a few that
may be of interest to many of your
readers in "Webfoot."
Mr. Walter Rhineliart a very
promising young man, perhaprmore so
when he was single than now, for then
he wa considerable of a flirt, and
"took . well" among the girl Single
life did not suit, so he resolved to make
it even. He and his wife are living in
quiet and comfort in a neat little cabin
on his pre-emption of ICOacresj one
and a half miles from Mayrillc,
Webb Edwards is the same here as
in your vjlley, always up and around,
kl is sure to grasp tho firt swallow
as It soars away to the blue sky. He
has- purchased 80 acres of land for the
sum of .SSCO. This, with his timber
culture and homestead, makes- him a
complete farm. He is going into the
cattiu and horse .business.

he is. He is lively and full of fun, and

him. He is not going to follow the '
plow to gain wealth, but will devoto
his energy to cattle ' rdhing. ' His head
is level you may be s'ure, and success
will crown his efforts.
Silas Keeney is the same that he was
ten years ago, nevjjr. in a hurry, and I

not get Ins potatoes dug until the beau
tiful snow had covered the vines. He
is engaged in the sheep business, bat
does not do any of the herding himself,
so I do not mean to say that he in a
"sheep herder."

There is a man in Nevada named
Angola Cardolia who claims to be the
strongest man in the world. He is an
Italian, ng-d 38, and stands fivo foet '
ten inches, weighing 138 pounds. Hie
strength was born with him, for he had
no athletic training. He diflera from
other men chiefly in the osseous struct
ure. Although not of unusual size, hi
spinal column is much beyond the
usual width, and his hones and joints
are made on a similar large and gener "
ous scale. He has lifted a man of 200
