London Life) tells some anecdotes
of Lord Tennyson's peculiar grutTness.
On one occasion he was at a garden
party, and soiii'-boily offered him a
sandwich, lie was laboriously munch
ing this when the hostess rushed up to
him with anxious inquiries about his
health and entertainment. "Thank
you, niiuliune, I am eating a sandwich
Are your sandwiches usually made of
old boots, may I ask!" Another time
Im was to read one of his ponms at a
houso where there was a pirty of
young ladies. He blankly refused. ' I
sliau'i, he said. Presently he noticed
that 01m of tho girls was ho deeply dis
appointed that the tears stood in her
eyes. He laid his hand on her shoul
der and said, "Would you like to hear
mo read?" "Oh, yes! ' slm exclaimed.
Then I will. People say I am a brute,
mid they are riht, but I will read to
you." "Then 1 will. And he took
and ili'lioliied everybody by reading
for a long time.

It is a strange story that coinrs from
the Scotch Highlands and fain would
we hope that it may prove untrue. Ac
cording to a dark report a Dissenting,
minister up there, who was once ro-
pected with the best of them, has
fallen a victim to the use of tobacco.
Eoii on weekdays a minister of the
Free Kirk might h'nd something to do
better than to smoke; but so long as
he confined himself to poisoning the)
atmosphere of his back garden only,
with his tobacco, a free and liberal
congregation would leave him alone. 1
This rash clergyman, however, is said t '
to have gone further than that. His (
infatuation for the baneful weed has
tempted him to a furtive pipe on Sun
days; and with success he has become
over bold. The wild rumor has cone
like wildliro through his congregation
that 011 Sunday nights when they are
supposed to be safe in bed, the mi
guided man may bo seen sitting
tit an open window in the manse pul
ling exultingly at a small clay pipe.
He can only be seen from the top of
the back garden wall; and it is said
that on Sunday nights a row of black
heads may now be cbservpd peering
over it. It is the Kirk session collect
ing evidence. St. James Gazette.
The origin of the feud between
John R. McLean, of Cinoinnati, and
Senator Tendleton is thus Btated: Mo-
Lean is warmly attached to his sister,
tho wife of. General-IIa.en. Somti
years ago Mrs. Hazen, meeting the
Pnndletons at some reception or social
gathering, received tho impression that
they meant to snub her. She told her
brother about it. He was young and
fiery, and in his indignation over the
fancied slight to his sister, resolved to
bring Mr. Pendleton down a peg or
two, He told his sister that he would
do it, and he has devoted a food many
years to the fulfillment of that prom
ise. Sir Thomas Colby, bnir.g in a pro
fuse sweat one night, happened to re
member that he had left '.he hey of his
wine cellar in the door, and
he left his bed, walked down
s'oirs, the sweating process was checked
from which he died in- a few days,
leaving $0,000,OCO in the Eng'ish
funds. His illness was so brief and
violent that he hud no opportunity to
make his will, and his immense prop
erty was divided among live or six iay
laborers, who . were his nearest rela
