Not many months ago a jury in one of the city oourts could not reach a verdict and it was uecesxary for it to be locked up from Friday to Mondty morning. When Sunday came many of the mombers wanted to go to church, and they asked the colored bailiff who had charge of them if they could have the privilege. He was sorry that they could not. J' But," said he, "gentle men, if you want to hear a sermon, I'm a local preacher, and I can preach you one." Of course, they wanted it. A pulpit was improvised in the room, and the bailiff took a text and preached for ovor an hour on Ingersoll and infideli ty. " And it was a mighty good ser mon, too," said one of the jurytcen. Baltimore American. - From one of our Puget Sound ex changes we learn thn particulars of a case that is likely to attract the atten tion of the medical fraternity, Chas. Cose, who was employed as stevedore in loading a vessel at Tacoma, some timo ago, retired one night at usual, and awoke the next morning to find that his eyesight had entirely departed during the night. He felt no approach ing symptoms of the terrible affliction, that during a single night was to leave him stone blind. His friends to6k him to his home in Seattle, where experi enced osculists were called in to treat a case of which medical history furnish es no parallel. At last accounts the unfortunate man was no better, and it is feared by friends tlutt his sight is for ever lost. To one who feels the ap proach of such a calamity, and thus nerves himself for the inevitable, it is bad enough, but to one who retires at night in the full enjoyment of all his faculties, only to wake in the morning stone blind, it must be terrible, Logan's book is in thn hands of the publishers. He entitles it "Tbe great conspiracy; its history and origin." This does not allude, as might be sup posed to the stealing of the Presidency in 187 G. Perhaps Sherman will writ" a history of that, as he was one of the principal instigators and manipulators, and is denouncing Southern election frauds. The compositer stands within easy reach of every character he may have need of, and a boy ran leurn the position of each in the case in a f-'w hours. It is quite another matter when each word has a distinct character, as in China and Ja pan. A correspondent, describing thn o!lke of a Japanese paper, says that a full font of Japanese typn comprises 7,000 characters, of which 3,000 are in constant use, and for 2,000 more there are frequent calls. Tho type is dis posed about the composing rooms on racks, like those in a reading room, and the compositor wanders up and down the aisles, setting type and taking exer ciso at once. With so many characters it is no wonder that Japaneso proof readers have to be men of intelligence and high scholarship. The impossibili ty of telegraphing single-character' words has k.pt this great instrument of civilization in foreign hands, and made, it praticaly useless for the natives of China and Japan. "Do you never get tirodl" asked a visitor the other day of Firrt Assistant Postmaster General Stevenson, whom ho found in his Khirt sleeves, wiping out his 200th offensive partisan for the day. "The same question," replied Mr Stevenson, "was asked of a Scotch clergyman who used to preach three hours at a time. With the clerynit n I may say 'I do find it a wen bit tire some, but eh! mon, you should see how tired the other folks be!" The conviction of two such men as Fish and Ward can hardly fail to exer cise a salutary effect on the cluss of mon to which they belonged.
