ml void! The deeper the knifn goes
the. KU Oliver ill" evidence oi prewuus
dishonesty in all the department of
"overnnieiit. This failure ouidit not
have hem a surprise. Mr. loach has
long been known to he incompetent as
a ship liuihh-r, lieing thoroughly igr.or
ant of correct lines and model The
host architects on the great lakes have
always regarded him as an impostor
who could mt compete with honest
workmanship except through the col
lusion of those in powr. We were
informed yesterday Ly a ent!eman in
this city who inspected them hetorp
they went, into Her vice, tlut iioth the
City of Tokio and City of IVkin were
so poorly constructed that out $200,
001) were expendi-d on each fur repairs
not Ion;' after they were Utile. The
secretary of the Atlantic works, of
I!oston, where several monitors were
liuilt for the government during the
war. assured th writer last fall that
no istaMishmeiit in this country could
compete with John Uo it'll, whose con
tracts were draw n so as to preclude the
hid of every other Iddder. That such
a man has failed a somen of congrat
ulation to every friend of honest ml
ministration Tin; Republican purer a few weeks
n'o were yelling with delight because
they claimed no rascals had been found
by the administration. Now they are
singing a di!lercnt tune. They are
busily enrtged defending such rascals
as Koach and Chandler. They plead
the old worn out sympathy dodge. A
rascal that will nnspppropriate govern
ment funds is not a proper subject for
sympathy from honest nu n and women.
The penitentiary is the proper place
for such scoundrels. At one stroke
Secretary Whitney has found where
sJ.OUO.WO were in the act of being
stolen liy the 1 ascals. The honest men
in the country will applaud th" Secre
tary of the Navy in his gooil work.
The laud thieves are in a state of
excitement on account of the action of
Commissioner Sparks ir. hunting up the
land fiauds that have been prevalent
j during the past twenty years. He has
already declared forfeited millions t;f
acres of unearned railroad grants,
which will be given to the poor home
steader, lie is an honest man and
will expose every fraud that h as lieen
committed during the Pepublic.n rule.
The rascals are now being found, and
the average Republican organ is crying
for "syu pathy."
It appears from a Washington dis
patch that tin-re are more appeals for
retention in office than there are appli
cations for places in the public service.
The incumbents who have st long en
joyed the honors and fhe profits of pat
roici'V are louth to resign them. They
