They made a wild daiih, every man going in a different direction, Near by wan a croek nlout fifteen feet wide and eighteen inches deep. The night was one of the coldest of the recent severe weather. A distiller tnade a liold dash toward that creek. Lee Cape was on the off side of the Stream and put out to intercept him. As the moonshiner approached one lank Lee eame up on the other, both panting from the violent race. With out hesitation the fleeing 'stiller plunged in, and as he did so Lee Cape from the opposite bank presented a big revolver and said: "Haltr ,The moonshiner stopped in the mid dle of the stream. "Don't run," said Cape. "Hello, Lee," observed th( moon shiner, standing half-waist dvp in the icy water. "Hello, Mose," said Cape, "come out and give up." "xou come in and take me il you want me." "You run and I will shoot you." "I won't run." "Well come out then." I won't." "Well, stand there." fill do it." "Alright, said Cape, you stand in that water and I'll stand here. I can atand it if you can." The moonshiner's teeth began to chatter. At last he said: "W "Heyl" S "I'll have to cave; I'm coming out." "All right," And the blockader, shivering and freezing, came up dripping from the creek and Leo ninrohed him into camp. - Hare about Itt't Surrender. Col. Charles Marshal, of Haltiinore, -chief cf Gen. Lee's staff, speaking of the General's surrender at Appomattox, and of the meeting of Gens. Grant and Lee, says: When shown into the room 'Gon. Grant advanced and shook hands "with Gen. Lee. The federal comman der was in undress uniform. Gen. Grant by way of apology to Gen. Leo (for coming without baggage and be cause of his desire to reach the place t for the ceremony he had hastened to Ah place in undress uniform. This was the only all union to a sword that was mad' at (lie interview, After the i terms of surrender were settled, Gen. Grant explained that he was tulviiird that Lee's forces lml a nuniWr of federal prisoners who, like their cap tors, were out of rations. Gen. Sheri dan replied he would supply 2V00 rations. Gen. Grant then instructed him to rend 2.AUA rations to Gen. Lee's commissary. After the inter view .lew. Le asked fur Gen. Wil liams and thauked that ctlioer for his kindiuM to bis sou, Gen, Curtis Lee, who had been eapta red si-verul days Wore. When Gun. and Coj. Marshal rode away, the federal ollioers filled the front porch. Col. Mtraliul is not stre Gen. Grant was among them, for his thoughts were busy with other matters at the time. The water supply of 8t. Petersburg is found to contain only 300 germs to tb cubic cntinictrfr, although the source from which the supply is oh tained contains bacteria to the nuniWr of 10,000 per cubio centimeter. In vestigation shows that the destruction of the germ is due to the rapid mot ion of the water where it leaves the main source of supply. Acting upon this discovery, a noted engineer recently employed a centrifugal machine which he constructed hastily, and found that after suLjectinj the impure water to action for one hour, the numls-r of germs was reduced 90 per cent. Upon the basis of this experiment, it would twera pouime to clear a city s water upply by ulijoctiiij( it to a centrifugal motion. Mra.
