known in India. The celebrated Gor
ham coso -that endless ecd'-siantical
row had Lewi going on for niontliH,
tilling all the newHpapm and weighing

journals were eagerly opened for news
from home, nothing appeared but col
umn after column about the Gorham
case. It was upon this that Laing
wrote the editorial I have mentioned,
and I have often thought that it com
bined many of the greatest merits an
editorial can possess for it was short,
could lie understood by everybody, and
it faithfully reflected public opinion.
This was all, jut as it stood, head ljne
