THE EUGENE CITY GUARD. SATURDAY AUUU8T 2. 1884. . . ... n DEMOCRATIC TICKET, ' . For President, GROVEIt CLEVELAND, of New York. For Vice Pheside.nt, . , THOMAS A. HENDRICKS, ' of Indiana. For Presidential Electors, A. C. JONES, of Jackson, t L B. ISON, of Daker, V. D. FENTON, of Yamhill. Got. Cleveland Formally Accfpl. Gov. Cleveland was tondurnd the Democratic nomination last Wednes day hy the National Coniniittcn, and ac cepted tho nomination in the following brief and well chosen remarks: Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen of the Committee: Your formal announce ment doea not, of course, convey to me the first intimation of the result of the convention held by the Democracy of the notion, and as I listen to your diessage I aliout ni representatives flora all parts of m hnd of the great party which, claiming to be th.i party of the people, asks them to entrust to 1t the administration of the Govern ment. And when I consider that tin- trW th influf iiwi of th stern reality which the present surroundings create that I have b.ien chosen to represent the plans, purposos and policy of the Democratic party, I am profoundly impressed by the solemnity of the o casion and by the responsibility of my position. Though I gracefully appre ciate it, I do not at this moment con gratulate myself upon tho distinguished honor which has been conferred upon me, because my mind is full of an ar.x ious desire to perform well the part which has beon assigned to me. nor do lat thin moment forget that the rights of 80,000,000 of my fellow citizens are involved in our efforts to gain Demo cratio supremacy. This notification prenonU to my mind the consideration which more than all other, gives to the act of my party in convention assem bled a most serious and sober aspect The party and its representatives which ask to be entrusted, at the the hands of the people, with the keeping of all that .i i.. -...I ....... Concerns wicnn ptM'iiiti mm mnr nuu-iy, should only nk it with the full af pre ciation of the sac-redness of the trust, and with a firm riwolvn to administer it faithfully and well, I am a Democrat, because I believe tho truth lies at the foundation of Democracy. 1 have kept the faith be cause I believe, if rightly administered and applied, Democratic doctrines and measures will insure tho happiness, contentment and prosperity of the peo. pie. If in the contest upon which we now entor we steadfastly hold to the underlying principles of our pony's creed, and at all times keep in view the people's good, we shall be strong becauso we are true to ourselves, and because tho plain and independent voters of tho land will seek, by their suffrages, to compass their relief from rartv tyranny, where there should ie submission to the popular will, and their protection from party corruption, where there should be devotion to the people's interest. Thesi thoughts lund a consecration to our cause, and we go forth not merely to gain a , partisan advantage, but pledged to cive to those who trust us the utmost benefits and honest administration of national affairs. No higher purpose or motive can stimulate us to supreme effort, or urge us to continuous and earnest la bor and effective party organization. Lot us not fail in' this, and wo may confidently hope to reap tho full re ward of patriots' services woll per formed. I have thus called to mind some sim ple truths and a trite thought They are, it teems to me, too woll known to dwell upon at this time. I shall soon, I'hope, signify in the usual formal maner my acceptance of the nomina tion which ha been tendered to me. Ih the oieantime I gladly greet you all ' as co-workers in a noble cause. If Mr. Blaine is an inno ent and a maligned man, if his record is really clear, if he is a statesman of undii puted ability and approved prudence, now is the time to establish these facts and to confound f host who con temn him. And if Mr. Blaine's or gans don't bpgin soon to deal w ith his record, the inVvitablo conclusion will bo that they dare not e doubt whether this is a gooil year for a hur rah campaign under any circumstancfs and we are quite confident thai it is not a good year for tho Kepumiran party to hurrah with its mouth while working whitewash brushes with its hands.
